"Create a Story?" This is BAD UI!

Events happening in the community are now at Drupal community events on www.drupal.org.

Once upon a time, a developer named GreenJelly came to Groups.Drupal to write an article on how to make a Social Networking Unified Access Library (shameless plug http://groups.drupal.org/node/8371#comment-25572) and once he found the wonderful group that would support and talk about his idea, he would wonder around looking for a way to make a White Paper. At last, he was lost... He could not find a way to add a Article, he was stuck with a Story, and thus he wrote this fairy tail...

I think we should change it from Story to Article?

There is an issue but no

There is an issue but no patch yet at http://drupal.org/node/197765

The patch would be very easy and a good way to get your head around drupal's code repository and CVS etc! :)

Hmm I'd just go into content

Posted by stevebayerin on January 23, 2008 at 5:20am

Hmm I'd just go into content types and rename 'Create Story' into 'Create Discussion Topic' or 'Create Article' but if stuff really has to be recoded for that, I'd leave it alone.

Half the reason why I didn't use Groups was because I wasn't sure what g.d.o was about. Seeing that Jobs and Events can be created but no Topics for Discussion gave me the (rather sticky) impression g.d.o was more about real world meetings and employment since create story doesn't give first time users the impression that they have the opportunity to also create topics for discussion.

To change 'Create Story' to 'Create Article' in Drupal itself isn't really recommended but I think there could be an additional content type automatically created, after installation, called 'Create Article' (Its probably unnecessary bloat for a seasoned Drupal Users but I think it would improve the User Experience for first time site builders. Automatic creation of pre-defined content types could be possible once CCK is in Core. I'll wireframe out a few screens for that once I read all the usability reports.)

There are two issues at hand

Posted by Bevan on January 23, 2008 at 6:03am

There are two issues at hand here and you are mixing them up. One, 'story' is a bad name for the default content type in drupal. that is addressed in the patch in the above d.o issue. Two, Moshe (g.d.o's father) never changed it to something more meaningful (like discussion or article) while creating g.d.o.

I wouldn't recommend you spend your value-able wireframing and usability skills on either of those issues! :)

Hehehe, well I had to

Posted by stevebayerin on January 23, 2008 at 7:28am

Hehehe, well I had to support GreenJelly's case about g.d.o not having an option to create a post/article because it raises a valid point for the UX of new users to g.d.o. When I first used g.d.o, it appeared as if I could reply to posts but it appeared only certain members had the rights to post new articles (till I figured out that create story actually is the 'create an article' option.)

I wrote out half a post about wire-framing being only a secondary skill to improving UX (though easiest to quantify skill,) I decided it would be a whole topic on its own and belongs in another post.

I Believe an Article is much

Posted by GreenJelly on January 23, 2008 at 6:15pm

I Believe an Article is much better then start a discussion. We may write News, White Paper's or other documents. Well Documents on Groups Drupal might be nice, it maybe obscure within the core

ok, lets change

Posted by moshe weitzman on January 28, 2008 at 9:39pm

i am willing to change this. seems to me that discussion is better than article since article implies some more research has gone into the piece. discussion is more suited to what we do here.

I think article is barely better than story. so little improvement in fact that the ensuing confusion for existing groups.drupal.org users outweighs the benefit.

+1. "Create Discussion"

Posted by Walt Esquivel on January 29, 2008 at 9:27am

Article and Story both sound... as if someone is going to write something for the newspaper.

So, I think "Create Discussion" sounds best. Also, I support the format of "Create Discussion" since all the other "Create" functions are Verb Noun (e.g. Create Poll, Create Event, etc.).

Finally, "Discussion" has the added benefit in a group setting (as in g.d.o) in that it's exactly what we often want, a discussion!

How about 'Create New Discussion'?

Posted by senpai on January 28, 2008 at 11:46pm

I'd be thinkin' that 'Create New Discussion' perfectly sums up most user's needs and desires while browsing this site. Of course, when Moshe does this, a lot of drupal dojo documentation is going to have to change. We had to explain how to make posts in our group, you see.

How's 'Create Topic'

Posted by toursheet on January 29, 2008 at 12:06am

What about "Create Topic" - It gives the g.d.o user and reader an idea of what the story post is going to be about.

topic +1

Posted by greggles on January 29, 2008 at 2:10pm

The pro for topic is the same as the con for "create discussion" - to abuse the old peacenik slogan, "what happens if you post a discussion and nobody comments"? Is it still a "discussion" ?

People are "Creating topics" or "Creating discussion topics" but posting a new node doesn't itself create a discussion. "Discussion" might also carry some connotation of it being a debate or argumentative which is common but not always true. That connotation isn't there (for me) with a "topic".

Page vs. Story

Posted by greggles on January 29, 2008 at 9:57pm

How is page any better than Story? Would that be forward progress or sideways "progress"?

If I have a choice between Page, Discussion, Topic, or Discussion Topic I would choose one of the last 3 every time. A page doesn't get at the fact that the "story" content type is almost always the basis of further conversation. The other three do.

+1 for Create Topic

Posted by stevebayerin on January 30, 2008 at 2:02pm

+1 for Create Topic.

With a general sounding description, users would be able to post discussion topics and other possible topics using that single menu item. If there were to be a 'Create Discussion Topic', another menu item would also have to be available for posts that that do not fall into the currently existing categories.

Having one menu item that can cater to all possible posts (that don't need extended functionality that events, jobs and polls do) also avoids overpopulating the menu with menu items.

Start?

Posted by michelle on January 29, 2008 at 3:59pm

How about "Start topic"? I know it doesn't fit the whole "create" theme we've got going but I think it sounds better.

Does 'Post New Topic' sound

Posted by stevebayerin on February 2, 2008 at 6:21pm

Does 'Post New Topic' sound any good?

"Post New Topic" makes it

Posted by senpai on February 6, 2008 at 10:41pm

"Post New Topic" makes it sound as if the user is posting in response to something, so I'd have to say it's not quite as good as Greggle's "Create Topic", which is inherently shorter in menus (something Moshe will love)

done - create discussion

Posted by moshe weitzman on February 9, 2008 at 3:37pm

i went with Create Discussion over Create topic (which is good too) because create topic sounds alittle like you are creating a taxo term or category.

Status = 'fixed'.

Oops, this isn't the issue queue, is it? ;-)

YES! Change Story to Article!

Posted by mikeschinkel on June 28, 2008 at 9:52pm

YES! Change Story to Article! I just finished converting an old Drupal website and moving to a new Drupal website and I intuitively created an "Article" content type and moved all content to it from "Story", but there was still confusion on part of my client regarding what the heck "Story" was to be used for.

Article=Good, Story=Bad.

Discussion

Posted by michelle on June 28, 2008 at 10:05pm

This is an old, well, discussion. It's already been resolved and "story" changed to "discussion".

By "discussion", you mean

By "discussion", you mean "article".

No...

Posted by michelle on June 29, 2008 at 12:55pm

I mean discussion. This post isn't about Drupal core; it's about g.d.o. And, if you look to the right, you can clearly say it says "Create discussion" :)
