Hello!

So I've been colluding with Tim a little, and I'm trying to get a feeling for how many people would come to a Drupal get together, in Cardiff. I'm guessing at about 5, based on this thread, maybe with a couple of others who aren't here... ;-)

How does 6pm on September 27th sound? My employer's happy to donate space, and has offered to give the gift of pizzas. For the alcoholically minded, there are a number of pubs, clubs and bars in the near vicinity (Cardiff Bay), and if you wanted to bring something to the party there's a Tesco express within staggering distance.

Would this be an acceptable start for a Drupal South Wales meetup?

First off, cheers to your employer!

I'd love to join any meetup, unfortunately I'm in Germay between the 17th September and 5th October, visiting friends and family.

Is September too soon to organise for, then? Maybe something in October?

I don't mind either way. I've been slightly out of touch with regards to Drupal, so not sure what I could bring to the table any way - I just applaud you to your efforts and greatness :)

Fantastic! I used to work in Cardiff Bay a few years ago. I also had an interview at SubHub before I accepted my current job at Horse & Country TV.

Posted by jonthomas83 on August 23, 2010 at 3:03pm

Thanks instanceofjamie, that really is very generous of you and your employers to organise such an event. I'm sure we're all very grateful.

It'd be nice to get everyone in on the action so maybe when tdimg gets back? I can do any time according to my diary, the only time a little difficult for me is 12-15 Oct (not impossible if the time is reasonable) and 25 Oct is definitely a no no. I do however, prefer weekdays but it's not impossible for me to do a weekend.

If I can help in any way, let me know.

P.S. I may be able to persuade my mate, are we sticking to the numbers indicated above or is the room for more?

Again, many thanks.

October, then..

Posted by instanceofjamie on August 25, 2010 at 12:45pm

Sounds like October's best - sometime after the 5th, and not the 25th. For my own part (and upon reflection and checking in with the family) Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays are the best evenings to go for.

So, I'll make a tentative suggestion of Thursday October 7th, and leave it for anyone else to comment on.

Is the suggestion of SubHub's workspace okay? I should clarify that it'd actually be in a communal area at our new office rather than in the proper office. So it'd hopefully be more relaxed than a desks and chairs type arrangement. I've heard a rumbling that people generally prefer meetups at pubs, and I've no problem with that if it's what everyone prefers, but bear in mind the free pizza and wifi ;-) Speaking for myself, I'm not a pub fan and I don't drink, so I'm aware I may be biased.

Tim's at Drupalcon, so I think we should wait til he's back to get his input. I know he was keen to organise something, and he may have lots of useful stuff to add :-)

opdavies - nice to hear you've met our humble team before. How long ago did you visit? Things have probably changed a lot since then.

jonthomas83 - as far as I'm concerned, the more the merrier. We can probably accommodate a good 15 people before it gets uncomfortable. I'm not sure how many of my colleagues would be interested.

I doubt anyone would want anything formal with talks, so I guess the first meetup should just be getting to know each other a bit and seeing who's around? It's new territory for me, this, so I doubt any pressure from organising a bigger event would go well!

Great, then. If noone objects within the next couple of weeks, I'll set it up as an event, and start getting the word around to other places than this, and see what happens.

Great! Thursday 7th is fine

Posted by jonthomas83 on August 25, 2010 at 7:34pm

Great! Thursday 7th is fine by me!

The pub/not pub thing is fine with me, I'm not an alcohol drinker myself so a good cold can of coke will suffice nicely. I do like the social setting of a pub sometimes but for this, it'd be nice to get to know people first, then pub at a later date! :)

I don't think you're on your own, it's all new territory for me too and I'm sure there are others.

Something that could be good, depending on what level of Drupal experience you were looking for in attendees is advertising the event on www.cardiffwebscene.com. I'm not sure what response it would get but we could put out a notice suggesting that there are "only 8 places left so hurry" (for example)? Just an idea.

Keep us updated!

P.S. My mate is interested so I guess that's two places from my side. Cheers! :)

Gatecrashing

Posted by fries on August 25, 2010 at 8:45pm

Hi all,

I'd like to head along to this if thats ok by everyone?

I'm primarily a PHP dev based over in Bristol and I used to hack on drupal many many moons ago, but have fallen out of touch more recently.

Would be good to see what is happening in the Cardiff Drupal "scene"

Can't speak for everyone

Posted by instanceofjamie on August 27, 2010 at 7:11am

Can't speak for everyone obviously, but I've personally got no problem with Bristolians attending. The language barrier shouldn't be a problem ;-)

re: the 15 people thing, that's not a hard limit, just a rough guess of how many folks we could fit in easily. If it gets pushed over that, we might just have to ask people to bring their own beanbags, or risk sitting on the floor or something. It might come to that, anyway! I guess we should just see what happens and use it as a benchmark for future meetups.

Fine with me. :)

I was mostly hinting at the unique dialect of Bristol more than Welsh :P I worked over at Aust for nearly 3 years before coming here. Also commuting.
