Drupal Philippines 2010: Meetup DOS

Events happening in the community are now at Drupal community events on www.drupal.org.
Posted by marcrobinsone on May 24, 2010 at 2:33pm

Before anything else, I'm taking this opportunity to congratulate everyone who participated at our Summer Meetup last May 22nd. A lot of people have been calling it a "success", and your feedback are indeed very inspiring. Let's all take credit in this wonderful achievement!

Without you, it couldn't have been more fun & dynamic.

Without you, we won't be having another meetup.

You heard that right! We're doing it again. ;)

Because of your awesome participation, we are ready to move forward to the next chapter of our community building.

What we learned.

  • We learned that we need more events like this (and other forms) in order to nurture our community's local talents.

  • We learned that foreigners such as Philippe Barthelemy (from France, ShoreCloud) and Jeff Williams (from Los Angeles, CaptainDrupal) are very eager to mingle, help and collaborate with us Filipino locals.

  • We realized that there were natural speakers amongst us (Adolfo "Danreb" Nasol, Daniel Honrade, Jhef Vicedo) who not only impressed the ladies but took us with surprise.

  • We noticed that while most were shy-types, we're not afraid to be ambush-interviewed by the eccentric host. We learned a lot from the side-stories about where we all come from and it is truly motivating.

  • We know that our doors are open to Joomla experts (Eric Conrad, Mythel de Paula) even with the endless comparison of these platforms (and other foss projects too). Oh, and we look forward to what promises to be a spicy Salsa dance from Mythel! Ooh la lah.

  • Most importantly, we learned the importance of signing-up early.

What's new?

This time around, Marcky won't be doing all the planning & the talking. According to reliable sources, he'll be focusing on other sides of production for the next event.

Who will do that talking then? YOU!

When is this going to be?

That depends on whether G2iX is willing to offer the Techbar for us again. Schedule is pending until sponsorships are confirmed.

Right now we know that this might sometime this June - August 2010. Check out the poll (c/o Chamé).

What are the topics?

We are now opening the floor for session proposals for the next meetup. Simply post your session proposals below (as many as you like) so the organizers can schedule time-slot for it.

In the event where we have tons of session proposals to choose from, we will all vote on the ones we like to see.

Session Proposals here

Posted by marcrobinsone on May 24, 2010 at 2:38pm

You know what to do :). Take a pick and give your session proposals a shot!

Remember that you can choose any of the following session types:

  • individual talks (15-30 minutes per speaker)
  • panel discussions (tandem or group question-and-answer)
  • technical demos -- which may also be done during recess / snack time (to save time)
  • sponsor / commercial plugs

Any schedule yet?

A long hiatus from drupal, but now revisiting my old, and first passion, hehe.. kelan po ang DOS?

Views Slideshow - Dynamic Display Block

Posted by danielhonrade on May 25, 2010 at 12:36am

Technical Demo of Views Slideshow - Dynamic Display Block, developed by Philip Blaauw.

It's a great module for viewing nodes, images, etc. in thumbs together with sliding window, Views DDBlock has features which will turn your sites into pro in no time, easy to install, with ready-made samples, so with few customizations, you'll get it up and running in no time.

I think Philip mentioned that his modules have been downloaded for more than 10,000 times already and being packaged with commercial themes.

If you vote on this, I'll be doing the demo (since Philip can't come this June):
- installation
- configuration
- customization

Two thumbs up

Working as a Drupal Front End Developer?

Posted by danielhonrade on May 25, 2010 at 12:41am

Individual topic: What do you need to work as a Front End Developer?

If you're interested, I will discuss this topic working as a front end developer, I'll give some samples of daily tasks of a themer in a Drupal web company, so this is like viewing what to expect from this kind of job.

+1 din dito

"How Tos" topics in Drupal

Posted by danielhonrade on May 25, 2010 at 1:16am

Probably, we can all share some techniques "How tos" in Drupal, some common website configurations or functionalities we want to achieve and how we can achieve them. (This will really increase our common knowledge and skills in Drupal)

Examples
1) How to hide the teasers on front page, (you might be surprised that a lot of modern websites don't show main contents on front page)
2) How to customize the look of Login Block or page (if you don't like how Drupal present the login look, you can change it.)
3) How to overcome the 30-stylesheet limit of IEs, (what? yes, IEs can't use more than 30 css files, if you put more modules in Drupal, chances are you are putting more than 30 separate stylesheets, it's hard to develop while your css optimization is turned on, so What happens on IEs? - your website will look messed up or unformatted.)
4) How to ... (please add your "How tos")

From Dev to Prod

Posted by calmher on May 27, 2010 at 11:05pm

4- How to easily facilitate a better work-flow of Drupal sites between a development and a production environment (malamang hindi ako ang magpe-present nito, kasi yung sa akin ay slow, long and painful process)

Session Proposal: Leveraging Skinr

Posted by marcrobinsone on May 25, 2010 at 7:52pm

Skinr is a wonderful module that allows your theme to have preset styles which you can turn on/off. Easily change the "skin" style of your blocks or node-content, or apply custom css classes.

This is aimed to be a 15-minute technical demo with the following subtopics:

  • installing and using Skinr 1.0
  • Skinr-enabled themes
    • Fusion / Adaptivethemes / et. al
  • creating custom Skinr settings for your theme
  • Skinr 2.0 features demo

Only local images are allowed.

There are a bunch of tools out there that helps designers and developers in creating a visual mock-up for websites.

  • Get acquainted with the easy-to-use, free, and most of all user-friendly tools
  • Learn the basics of Drupal website prototyping (in mock-up form)
  • Discover how fun it is to collaborate with other developers + your client in using these tools

This is intended to be a 30-minute technical demo of the tools that will be featured & discussed.

Pressflow or Rules?

Posted by fusionx1 on July 15, 2010 at 3:56pm

Hi Guys,

I can personally present one of these topics:

PressFlow by fourkitchens - 30min presentation

Pressflow is a distribution of Drupal with integrated performance, scalability, availability, and testing enhancements.
Pressflow addresses a long-standing problem: High-traffic sites use stable versions of Drupal, and stable versions of Drupal are ineligible for enhancements to solve performance bottlenecks discovered after widespread deployment.

Rules - 15/30min presentation

The rules modules allows site administrators to define conditionally executed actions based on occurring events (known as reactive or ECA rules). It's a replacement with more features for the trigger module in core and the successor of the workflow-ng module.
