Media FAQ needed

Events happening in the community are now at Drupal community events on www.drupal.org.

There are quite a few repeating issues popping up in the Media queue, such as all those about users not getting a video player working. In many cases it turns out they are under the impression Media comes with support for this. In other cases their problems should be dealt with in the module providing the integration.

A FAQ would help us keep the queue cleaner, and at the same time be a great resource for users to find answers to common problems they face.

It would be great if someone could volunteer to take on the task of creating one. There is a Media section at http://drupal.org/documentation/modules/media where it can be added to.

Any takers?

I've posted these questions, not much for answers yet. The fifth item is the same as the first.

Great start

Thanks guys, your really off to a great start. As per mtnguru's request I have moved the FAQ to the Media section as it is linked to from the project page. I also moved it to the top of the sub pages on that page.

Its actually quite easy to control the order of the sub-pages. You just need to adjust the weight in the book-outline section. Default they are all 0 and thus in alphabetic order.

While you could rearrange them manually, it might later turn out to a tedious task when many FAQ pages are added. Since they are in alphabetic order as default you could use that to your advantage such as:

  • "Video - Displaying"
  • "Video - YouTube"

That way all video related will be grouped together automatically and it will be very easy for the visitors to locate the topic they are looking for.

Just a suggestion, but my own experience this is actually a time saver in the end instead of manually controlling it using the weight setting.

Is the FAQ for associated modules also?

Posted by mtnguru on February 12, 2012 at 8:02pm

We currently have the Media FAQ under the Media Module.

I understand the need for developers to focus on their module, they don't need to be pulled every direction. But the FAQ is to help users solve a problem and they need to be able to look at all options including alternatives and associated modules.

Some of the Questions I have and some of those sten submitted are outside the scope of the Media Modules.

I think we should move the FAQ up a level in the hierarchy under "Asset and Media Management Modules".

Media FAQ

Posted by mtnguru on February 16, 2012 at 6:03pm

I've been working on the FAQ but didn't like my decision to use many pages. So today I changed it to a single page.

I've added quite a few pages and answered what I could. I have more work to do. I plan to spend a day with IRC and ask the community the questions one by one.

Unfortunately I've got to go right now and won't get back to this until this weekend.

I am totally underwhelmed at the drupal.org website. The community should be ashamed. Editing an html field is painful!

Also, how do I delete the pages I added for sub-categories. I don't think I have the permissions to do it?
