Hello Media fans,
I would like to take this opportunity to open a discussion about what the Media Support Squad should do to best help drive the Media Initiative.
First though I would like to welcome mtnguru and jerryitt as the first two members of the squad. I am really looking forward to work with you on helping to make Media great.
No Coding Skills Required
I would like to stress that there is room for everyone in the squad. You do not need any coding skills, just basic understanding of Drupal and web technology. In fact, in many cases less coding skills is an advantage since you then think as a users. As long as you have a keen interest to learn more and help out, that is enough to start with. We who know a little bit more are more than happy to help guide you to become a superstar squad member.
Also, we are not asking you to commit X hours to this. It's perfectly fine if you are able to help out an hour here and there.
Initial Squad Tasks
Now, what shall the support squad do? In my view, the immediate focus should be:
- Help get a full 1.0 release out so we then can focus completely on the 2.x branch.
- Go over all the open issues (around 300) to try and close as many as possible to get it down to a more manageable number.
- Help the code developer testing patches and give feedback on the issues they currently work on.
Point 1 means focusing on the D7 stable release blocker list, which currently only has 2 open issues left for the 1.x branch. There might be one or two that needs backporting of those for the 2.x branch though. With so few left, we can hopefully wrap it up in no time at all.
To help you get a suitable Drupal installation I have started to work on a Media Support Squad feature module, see http://groups.drupal.org/node/207718, which makes it very easy to set up, or quickly re-install, a good working environment. Please have a look at it and give some feedback.
Its currently only available for the Media 1.x branch. Its also in the Full Project issue queue (since it is my first project on d.o), hopefully it soon be accepted so I can make it into a full project with easy to download modules. When that happens I will also add a feature that does the same for the 2.x branch. (If you are able to review the application please go here).
Point 2 will require a bit more work. However, I'm quite sure there are plenty of dupes or old issues that doesn't apply anymore. So, with a bit of willpower we should be able to churn through them pretty quick. Once that is done, we will have a much nicer and manageable issue queues to work with.
Point 3 is also important, the code developers, and other contributors, are working on many patches at the moment and good feedback means they can be committed quicker. Thus we can't forget them...
Those are the three points I would like to see us focusing on for the immediate future. I think it will also be a great way of getting to know each other better and find the best ways of working together.
Sooner rather than later we will not only have a 1.0 release, but also a 2.0...
Then what
I deliberately chose to call it Support Squad and not Bug Squad because I see us not only working on bugs, but also other tasks needed to help making media support for Drupal the best there is.
While we work on this we will gather a unique knowledge about everything the project covers, so once the first dust settles I would like us to also coordinate work with the Documentation team to improve the much needed documentation for the Media and File Entity modules. Our focus will be on the user documentation, while developers will have to deal with the more technical documentation.
OK, there you have my ideas about what the Media Support Squad should start working with.
Feel free to comment on the above and come with suggestion on how we best can support this very important Drupal project.

See, it is my hat
Hi Thomas,
I am very willing to join the MSS!. My work will be completely focused on the 2x branch (because it is the branch I use privately and to be honest I don't care about 1x) and I am one of those non-coders. I can comb through the queue and I am very willing to test loads of patches (if time permits of course). I already did similar work for the Node Gallery module where I assisted justintime in managing the queue and getting a stable release out of the door. After I switched completely to D7 I left this great module so that I now feel the urge to help on another front.
I really hope we can get Media up to where it belongs.
Thanks for joining David.
Thanks for joining David. It's of course perfectly fine that you focus on the 2.x branch. I like your approach also as I have written about that the best way I have found testing things is simply to try and build the things you want to build with them.
As the team grows, I have a hunch that there at some stage will be a need for us to specialize working on different aspects of the projects. Some may focus the Entity while others focus on the Media module or even a part of it. We will see how it play out.
I am personally very optimistic about that we will see a lot of thing happening with the media project from now on. Hopefully we will be able to accomplish a lot before the code sprint that is planned for DrupalCon Denver as well.
Is dddave your IRC nick as well btw? Need to know so I can add it to the MSS wiki page, or you can do that yourself if you don't mind.

I never used irc before i have to admit full of shame. I am going to change this. I'll have to dive back into media module. Since Christmas I was more or less out of the game but now better times are ahead...or so I hope.

No shame in that. It will probably be a little overwhelming at first, but you will quickly discover how incredible useful it can be.

Awww, I heavily doubt that I am available tonight. Hope I can get into the next meeting though.
I am going to work on some private projects next which depend heavily on Media so I should get a better overview about where media 2x stands at the moment. When I get a better grasp of it I'll be able to answer more recent issues and not only do some clean-up work.
Happy To Help -- But
@tsvenson
I am happy to help but given my work load unless you assign me tasks I am likely not to get anything done. I can contribute a few hours each week.
We are using 1.x branch and would love to see it go stable.
Let me know on irc as harley but need to change to hyperglide

Lovely. I'm quite sure that you soon will be able to pick tasks to work on.
Glad to hear you want to help with the 1.x branch, As i said, there aren't much blocker issues for it, but there are plenty of other smaller issues that needs attention.
Here is a complete list of existing Media 1.x bugs that might be handy for you. In total around 35 issues.
If you look at the list you see there are many that are for specific version (i.e. not -dev). You could for example start going through those and see if they can be replicated in the current dev-version. If that is possible, just write a comment about that its still a bug and change the version to 1.x-dev.
If you on the other hand find that the bug has been corrected in -dev, then comment about that and put the issue to fixed.
For any other result of your testing, just write a comment about your findings so that we get a current updated on the status.
Thanks for joining.

Please offer any comments.
I would alos suggest we have a common make or test platform that we all use to help ensure we are working from the same base code.
I suspect you already have a Media site Make File -- if so can you please share. -- I am now following you on GitHUB.

Your off to a good start. The first issue is very good. The second though I think you might have misread a bit. See my comment there.
Also, a tip is when you want to link to another issue, use [#issuenumber] as d.o will automatically turn that into a link with the current issue title as well as indicate the status of it by color an hover text. I'm sure you have seen such links and wondered where they came from. See the Input format section under the text area for issues for more tips on markup you can use.

Thanks for the reply Thomas and help.
Shall look for your feature http://groups.drupal.org/node/207718 and then can try to test these in a more work test environment.

MSS feature
I am actually working on a test platform for the squad that will help us be more efficient. Currently it is a Features based module. Please see http://groups.drupal.org/node/207718 for more info on it.
When that is done, I am going to look into how to create a full profile for it, as well as the existing media_dev profile. I believe that profile and our needs might be pretty much the same so hopefully we can use that.
I haven't done any install profiles myself yet so its going to be an interesting exercise.

Speaking on IRC aobut it at
Speaking on IRC aobut it at the moment but I'm happy to help.
My background is probably as a "site builder" and I sort of manage 2 programmers who actually code with Drupal. We've used Media + file entity to help build a large resource library of talks for a client that can be searchable with Search API.
The things I'm interested in:
1) Killing off media 1 (It makes me really uncomfortable every time I have to make the decision to pick on or the other)
2) Figuring out when to attach a field to a file entity and when to a media entity!
My understanding is that 1 and 2 are not simple answers and being involved in the support squad may help me grok things a little.
I think you might have
I think you might have misunderstood the purpose of the squad. Our goal is to help the code developers being able to focus more on the actual code writing. We do that by testing patches to give them feedback on how things work (or not), confirm bugs reported by users, answer support tickets to name a few.
However, while doing this work we also learn a lot about how Media and File Entity works, knowledge we have great use of for our own needs.
Both you questions are really off-topic in this thread as they are about issues you have regarding the way you want to use these modules and not about how you can help out.

Um, maybe I didn't put it
Um, maybe I didn't put it clearly...
Which is why I'm a little confused because "However, while doing this work we also learn a lot about how Media and File Entity works, knowledge we have great use of for our own needs." is exactly what I mean?
I wrote those questions to show specifically my motivations to help answer the questions "Anything particular you would like to help out with?". Basically anything that helps both those 2 things?
Question 1) - Well anything that helps me understand the differences between the 2 and helps you guys move it is an area I'd like to help
Question 2) - Anything that gets me helping with helping people decide how they ought to use media module (especially in terms of things like where to attach fields, what use cases is media good vs other modules, etc) is an area I am interested.
With "particular" I meant
With "particular" I meant things such as support, testing patches, writing documentation or other initiative to help drive the Media project forward.
I wanted to get a feel for what users would like to work on as at some point we will need teams that takes on for example the documentation task, or like sten and mtnguru that volunteered to create and maintain the Media FAQ.
We are all, especially me, still learning and trying out what the squad will be. But it is starting to shape up pretty nice so far.
