Easy to Use CMS for Kids

Events happening in the community are now at Drupal community events on www.drupal.org.

After stumbling across this forum post (http://www.webmasterworld.com/content_management/3767598.htm) and finding out that Joomla has a release branch that is catered towards children (http://joomlacode.org/gf/project/jkids/frs). Having a 5 year old of my own, I'd be thrilled to see him working with Drupal, even if it was to upload pictures or write a journal. I was unable to find a group here on D.O. that was similar topic but thought it would be worth mentioning. If we were able to get an installation profile released we may gain some new users. But I think what's more important is we'd be able to take a step back and look at ways to address very basic user interface and usability issues.

There'd be little need to discuss complex programming, powerful modules or edge case scenarios. I think what would be needed for this to work is a limited administration panel (with lots of pictures), a child friendly base theme, couple content types and a very basic WYSIWYG editor.

Here's a few standalone applications that would be good to use as a reference for usability

Hello all I just discovered this group...

I am leading a Coding for a Cause - Drupal for Kids session at this years FLORIDA DRUPALCAMP 2015. I would like to get some use cases from people who have taught Drupal to either a class or their own children.
I would also like to use the experience from Coding for a Cause - Drupal for Kids session as a way to jumpstart this group.

Standard site name for Drupal Camps

Posted by njmahesh on September 26, 2011 at 10:56pm

Drupal camps have been very valuable sources for learning many things from Gigs and also update with new stuff. Its really useful to watch videos/slides after the camp is done but everyone having different names based on their group, year which really confuse a lot, I mean they can any name they want but the site name for all the Drupal camps I feel should be consistent so I don't need to track or search for it.

My suggestion is:

year.drupalcamp.groupname

For ex:

2011.drupalcamp.nyc

Relevant - Case Study

Posted by davidburns on November 27, 2008 at 1:28am

Here's a case study (http://drupal.org/node/339500), but it's more about launching a site and making it kid friendly. Where as I'm interested in putting together a platform which is easy for kids to install and maintain.

It's an excellent write-up about privacy and usability, there's a good amount that can be learned from it.

Here's my suggestion as to what items should appear on a Kid Friendly Drupal administration page. Using a graphical layout similar to Control Panel module or Root Candy administration theme (but even more comical)

Content Management
- Content
- Comments

Site Building
- Blocks
- Themes

User Management
- Users

Reports
- Recent log entries
- Top search phrases
