Alternative forms

[edit ]

Etymology

[edit ]

From Old Norse fura , from Proto-Germanic *furhwǭ , an alternative form of *furhō . Akin to English fir .

The alternative form, furu , is an eastern dialectal form from the oblique form of Old Norse fura (furu ). Eastern dialects retain the -u in short-syllable words, whence the common split seen in víse  : viku .

Some dialects have metaphony in furu, although less noticeable than in some other words (e.g. vuku [2ʋʉ.kʉ] < [vi.ka]), while others have two different u-sounds. For instance North Gudbrand Valley with [2fʉ.ɾu] instead of *[2fu.ɾu] (compare turu [2thu.ɾu]).

  • IPA (key): /2fuːrə/, [2fuːrə], [2fu̞ːrə]
