Semi pro teams in the infobox

[edit ]

Hi. GPL93 has removed Johnny Furphy's pre-NBA semi pro teams from the infobox [1]. It was noted by GPL93 that semi-pro leagues are not included based on consensus. Overtime Elite was noted as one that is not included, when in fact there was a general agreement in May/June 2023 that Overtime Elite can be included as players get paid – discussion here (see Alex Sarr). I noted that "semi professional teams are common in infoboxes across the project", whereas GPL93 disagrees. Torrey Craig for example played in an Australian semi-pro state league prior to becoming an NBA player. So did Dyson Daniels. Many professional American imports play in Australian state leagues such as the NBL1. It would be great to hear from others. DaHuzyBru (talk) 05:48, 25 February 2025 (UTC) [reply ]

I am against removing teams like this from infoboxes. If this were to be applied, there would also be a slew of American "semi-pro" teams that would have to be removed from them as well. Even then, what might be considered a "semi-pro" league in one country could in fact be better-paying, better organized, better attended, etc. etc. than many "pro" leagues elsewhere. IMO, leagues like the Drew League or the TBT do not even belong in the same conversation as something like the NBL1. JTtheOG (talk) 06:46, 25 February 2025 (UTC) [reply ]
FIBA recognised official leagues should be included in the infobox. Alvaldi (talk) 07:05, 25 February 2025 (UTC) [reply ]
According to the Template:Infobox basketball biography guidelines "All stints for professional minor league, overseas leagues and club tournaments sactioned by FIBA should be listed." To my knowledge, neither the Drew League or the TBT are FIBA sanctioned. However, the NBL1 is. Alvaldi (talk) 09:07, 25 February 2025 (UTC) [reply ]
The key word being professional. I'm not sure that there are a slew of modern-day semiprofessional American teams that would need to be removed. Additionally, two teams Johnny Furphy played for were not in NBL1 but the Big V. Best, GPL93 (talk) 13:21, 25 February 2025 (UTC) [reply ]
Professional minor leagues to be exact, doesn't state that the overseas leagues and club tournaments have to be professional. Regardless, this guideline should be rewritten as it is an old leftover from the NBA biography infobox and is a bit USA centric (the NBA is an overseas league for me and minor leagues distinctions are not use alot outside of the USA).
I would suggest changing it to "All stints for professional leagues and FIBA sanctioned club leagues and tournaments (such as national cups) should be listed." Alvaldi (talk) 13:57, 25 February 2025 (UTC) [reply ]
I agree that the definition of "minor league" is confusing given it is US-centric. I think that lower, fully professional leagues would provide better clarity. Best, GPL93 (talk) 17:07, 26 February 2025 (UTC) [reply ]
@GPL93: are you willing to acknowledge that my point about "semi-professional teams being common in infoboxes across the project" is accurate? Many basketball player bios include semi-pro teams in their infoboxes. Additionally, two users above have expressed that they prefer not to remove these teams from the infoboxes. The "career_start" field in the infobox produces "Playing career", not "Pro career". Is 3 For and 1 Against adequate enough for re-inclusion of the content? DaHuzyBru (talk) 09:20, 27 February 2025 (UTC) [reply ]
For context, removing semi-professional teams from infoboxes would mean that we would have to remove the career history of hundreds of notable players from my native country because their teams, who easily pass WP:GNG due to the wast coverage their FIBA sanctioned league receives, aren't fully professional. That is something I can never agree to. Alvaldi (talk) 09:54, 27 February 2025 (UTC) [reply ]
  • Re-add as I am clearly on an island on this one. I see the argument for NBL1, still a little hesitant to the Big V teams though. Best, GPL93 (talk) 04:04, 1 March 2025 (UTC) [reply ]
I understand your concerns about Big V. While it's officially on the same second tier as NBL1 in Australian basketball, NBL1's growth since 2022 has certainly left Big V behind. I'll admit that including Melbourne University's 2022 listing is a bit questionable, since Division One is actually considered a third-tier competition, below the league's top division. DaHuzyBru (talk) 06:14, 1 March 2025 (UTC) [reply ]
I feel the Big V is more similar to the US semi-pro definition, but I was wrong to lump the Centre of Excellence. Best GPL93 (talk) 03:47, 3 March 2025 (UTC) [reply ]

I just started this article. Does anyone know if there is some basketball stats page that would fit the EL-section? And if you can think of any reasonable de-WP:ORPHANing, please do that.Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 18:26, 26 February 2025 (UTC) [reply ]
