Welcome to WikiProject Women in Red (WiR)!
Our objective is to turn red links into blue ones . Our project's scope is women's representation on all language Wikipedias (biographies, women's works, women's issues, broadly construed). Did you know that only 20.39% of the English Wikipedia's biographies are about women? Not impressed? Content gender gap is a form of systemic bias, and this is what WiR addresses. We invite you to participate, whenever you like, in whatever way suits you and your schedule. Editors of all genders are equally and warmly welcome at Women in Red!

Welcome!

In August 2026, Women in Red is focusing on one of Wikipedia's largest remaining content gaps: biographies of women born before 1900.

Women make up just over 20% of biographies on the English Wikipedia, but that gap is not evenly distributed across history. While coverage of women born in recent decades is becoming more balanced, we know that women born before 1900 remain significantly underrepresented (for example, for women born between 1600 and 1800, the percentage is more like 8-10%).

This event invites editors to help address that imbalance by creating, expanding, and improving biographies of notable women born before 1900. From rulers and scientists to artists, writers, campaigners, and pioneers in every field, there are countless notable women whose stories are still missing or incomplete on Wikipedia.

Whether you create one article or many, every contribution helps build a more balanced record of history.

The main goals of the event are:

  • to encourage inexperienced editors and show them how they can contribute to Wikipedia by creating biographies of prominent women
  • to draw the attention of more experienced editors to the need for concerted action on a specific area
  • to support Wikipedia in combating the systemic bias against the coverage of women and women's works
  • to promote the new/improved articles and images through social media

Thank you!
