WikiCup 2022 September newsletter
[edit ]New Page Patrol newsletter October 2022
[edit ]Hello Abishe,
Much has happened since the last newsletter over two months ago. The open letter finished with 444 signatures. The letter was sent to several dozen people at the WMF, and we have heard that it is being discussed but there has been no official reply. A related article appears in the current issue of The Signpost. If you haven't seen it, you should, including the readers' comment section.
Awards: Barnstars were given for the past several years (thanks to MPGuy2824 ), and we are now all caught up. The 2021 cup went to John B123 for leading with 26,525 article reviews during 2021. To encourage moderate activity, a new "Iron" level barnstar is awarded annually for reviewing 360 articles ("one-a-day"), and 100 reviews earns the "Standard" NPP barnstar. About 90 reviewers received barnstars for each of the years 2018 to 2021 (including the new awards that were given retroactively). All awards issued for every year are listed on the Awards page. Check out the new Hall of Fame also.
Software news: Novem Linguae and MPGuy2824 have connected with WMF developers who can review and approve patches, so they have been able to fix some bugs, and make other improvements to the Page Curation software. You can see everything that has been fixed recently here. The reviewer report has also been improved.
Suggestions:
- There is much enthusiasm over the low backlog, but remember that the "quality and depth of patrolling are more important than speed".
- Reminder: an article should not be tagged for any kind of deletion for a minimum of 15 minutes after creation and it is often appropriate to wait an hour or more. (from the NPP tutorial)
- Reviewers should focus their effort where it can do the most good, reviewing articles. Other clean-up tasks that don't require advanced permissions can be left to other editors that routinely improve articles in these ways (creating Talk Pages, specifying projects and ratings, adding categories, etc.) Let's rely on others when it makes the most sense. On the other hand, if you enjoy doing these tasks while reviewing and it keeps you engaged with NPP (or are guiding a newcomer), then by all means continue.
- This user script puts a link to the feed in your top toolbar.
Backlog:
Saving the best for last: From a July low of 8,500, the backlog climbed back to 11,000 in August and then reversed in September dropping to below 6,000 and continued falling with the October backlog drive to under 1,000, a level not seen in over four years. Keep in mind that there are 2,000 new articles every week, so the number of reviews is far higher than the backlog reduction. To keep the backlog under a thousand, we have to keep reviewing at about half the recent rate!
- Reminders
- Newsletter feedback - please take this short poll about the newsletter.
- If you're interested in instant messaging and chat rooms, please join us on the New Page Patrol Discord, where you can ask for help and live chat with other patrollers.
- Please add the project discussion page to your watchlist.
- If you are no longer very active on Wikipedia or you no longer wish to be a reviewer, please ask any admin to remove you from the group. If you want the tools back again, just ask at PERM.
- To opt out of future mailings, please remove yourself here.
New Pages Patrol newsletter January 2023
[edit ]Hello Abishe,
- Backlog
The October drive reduced the backlog from 9,700 to an amazing 0! Congratulations to WaddlesJP13 who led with 2084 points. See this page for further details. The queue is steadily rising again and is approaching 2,000. It would be great if <2,000 were the "new normal". Please continue to help out even if it's only for a few or even one patrol a day.
- 2022 Awards
Onel5969 won the 2022 cup for 28,302 article reviews last year - that's an average of nearly 80/day. There was one Gold Award (5000+ reviews), 11 Silver (2000+), 28 Iron (360+) and 39 more for the 100+ barnstar. Rosguill led again for the 4th year by clearing 49,294 redirects. For the full details see the Awards page and the Hall of Fame. Congratulations everyone!
Minimum deletion time: The previous WP:NPP guideline was to wait 15 minutes before tagging for deletion (including draftification and WP:BLAR). Due to complaints, a consensus decided to raise the time to 1 hour. To illustrate this, very new pages in the feed are now highlighted in red. (As always, this is not applicable to attack pages, copyvios, vandalism, etc.)
New draftify script: In response to feedback from AFC, the The Move to Draft script now provides a choice of set messages that also link the creator to a new, friendly explanation page. The script also warns reviewers if the creator is probably still developing the article. The former script is no longer maintained. Please edit your edit your common.js or vector.js file from User:Evad37/MoveToDraft.js
to User:MPGuy2824/MoveToDraft.js
Redirects: Some of our redirect reviewers have reduced their activity and the backlog is up to 9,000+ (two months deep). If you are interested in this distinctly different task and need any help, see this guide, this checklist, and spend some time at WP:RFD.
Discussions with the WMF The PageTriage open letter signed by 444 users is bearing fruit. The Growth Team has assigned some software engineers to work on PageTriage, the software that powers the NewPagesFeed and the Page Curation toolbar. WMF has submitted dozens of patches in the last few weeks to modernize PageTriage's code, which will make it easier to write patches in the future. This work is helpful but is not very visible to the end user. For patches visible to the end user, volunteers such as Novem Linguae and MPGuy2824 have been writing patches for bug reports and feature requests. The Growth Team also had a video conference with the NPP coordinators to discuss revamping the landing pages that new users see.
- Reminders
- Newsletter feedback - please take this short poll about the newsletter.
- There is live chat with patrollers on the New Page Patrol Discord.
- Please add the project discussion page to your watchlist.
- If you no longer wish to be a reviewer, please ask any admin to remove you from the group. If you want the tools back again, just ask at PERM.
- To opt out of future mailings, please remove yourself here.

New Pages Patrol newsletter June 2023
[edit ]Hello Abishe,
Backlog
Redirect drive: In response to an unusually high redirect backlog, we held a redirect backlog drive in May. The drive completed with 23851 reviews done in total, bringing the redirect backlog to 0 (momentarily). Congratulations to Hey man im josh who led with a staggering 4316 points, followed by Meena and Greyzxq with 2868 and 2546 points respectively. See this page for more details. The redirect queue is steadily rising again and is steadily approaching 4,000. Please continue to help out, even if it's only for a few or even one review a day.
Redirect autopatrol: All administrators without autopatrol have now been added to the redirect autopatrol list. If you see any users who consistently create significant amounts of good quality redirects, consider requesting redirect autopatrol for them here.
WMF work on PageTriage: The WMF Moderator Tools team, consisting of Sam, Jason and Susana , and also some patches from Jon , has been hard at work updating PageTriage. They are focusing their efforts on modernising the extension's code rather than on bug fixes or new features, though some user-facing work will be prioritised. This will help make sure that this extension is not deprecated, and is easier to work on in the future. In the next month or so, we will have an opt-in beta test where new page patrollers can help test the rewrite of Special:NewPagesFeed, to help find bugs. We will post more details at WT:NPPR when we are ready for beta testers.
Articles for Creation (AFC): All new page reviewers are now automatically approved for Articles for Creation draft reviewing (you do not need to apply at WT:AFCP like was required previously). To install the AFC helper script, visit Special:Preferences, visit the Gadgets tab, tick "Yet Another AFC Helper Script", then click "Save". To find drafts to review, visit Special:NewPagesFeed, and at the top left, tick "Articles for Creation". To review a draft, visit a submitted draft, click on the "More" menu, then click "Review (AFCH)". You can also comment on and submit drafts that are unsubmitted using the script.
You can review the AFC workflow at WP:AFCR. It is up to you if you also want to mark your AFC accepts as NPP reviewed (this is allowed but optional, depends if you would like a second set of eyes on your accept). Don't forget that draftspace is optional, so moves of drafts to mainspace (even if they are not ready) should not be reverted, except possibly if there is conflict of interest.
Pro tip: Did you know that visual artists such as painters have their own SNG? The most common part of this "creative professionals" criteria that applies to artists is WP:ARTIST 4b (solo exhibition, not group exhibition, at a major museum) or 4d (being represented within the permanent collections of two museums).
Reminders
- Newsletter feedback - please take this short poll about the newsletter.
- There is live chat with patrollers on the New Page Patrol Discord and #wikimedia-npp connect on IRC.
- Please add the project discussion page to your watchlist.
- To opt out of future mailings, please remove yourself here.
WikiCup 2023 September newsletter
[edit ]The fourth round of the competition has finished, with anyone scoring less than 673 points being eliminated. It was a high scoring round with all but one of the contestants who progressed to the final having achieved an FA during the round. The highest scorers were
- New York (state) Epicgenius, with 2173 points topping the scores, gained mainly from a featured article, 38 good articles and 9 DYKs. He was followed by
- Sammi Brie, with 1575 points, gained mainly from a featured article, 28 good articles and 50 good article reviews. Close behind was
- Thebiguglyalien, with 1535 points mainly gained from a featured article, 15 good articles, 26 good article reviews and lots of bonus points.
Between them during round 4, contestants achieved 12 featured articles, 3 featured lists, 3 featured pictures, 126 good articles, 46 DYK entries, 14 ITN entries, 67 featured article candidate reviews and 147 good article reviews. Congratulations to our eight finalists and all who participated! It was a generally high-scoring and productive round and I think we can expect a highly competitive finish to the competition.
Remember that any content promoted after the end of round 4 but before the start of round 5 can be claimed in round 5. Remember too that you must claim your points within 10 days of "earning" them and within 24 hours of the end of the final. If you are concerned that your nomination will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. It would be helpful if this list could be cleared of any items no longer relevant. If you want to help out with the WikiCup, please do your bit to keep down the review backlogs! Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages or by email. If you wish to start or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove your name from Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send.
I will be standing down as a judge after the end of the contest. I think the Cup encourages productive editors to improve their contributions to Wikipedia and I hope that someone else will step up to take over the running of the Cup. Sturmvogel 66 (talk), and Cwmhiraeth (talk)

[edit ]Draft:Losliya Mariyanesan (See User_talk:Ravensfire#Recreate?) since the page is blocked you can make it as a draft and submit it to articles for creation. The reason that you should create the article is that [1] she was a newsreader for Shakthi TV [2]. Claim to fame: Bigg Boss, acted in films Friendship (2021 film) [3], Koogle Kuttappa and Mr. Housekeeping . DareshMohan (talk) 05:42, 11 February 2025 (UTC) [reply ]
@DareshMohan: Hey hello, just finished up recently an article on 2025 Sri Lanka blackouts which is also in Afd. I mean if monkey never attempts to disrupt the sub-station in electrical grid, I can hopefully create an article within the day as I was also affected by the sudden power cuts. Jokes apart, well I can make an article on Losliya Mariyanesan by considering it as a part of Women in Red initiative. Well, I have seen her news anchoring in Shakthi TV. Bigg Boss Tamil is the real game changer and turning point in her life giving her the platform and it opened floodgates for hee to flourish all guns blazing. Abishe (talk) 07:06, 11 February 2025 (UTC) [reply ]
- @DareshMohan: Losliya Mariyanesan article is successfully created by me from the scratch. Her career trajectory reminds me of Sivakarthikeyan from Star Vijay to Kollywood's next best thing and Losliya is from Shakthi TV to then Star Vijay to film industry. She also gives me reminders on B. H. Abdul Hameed and Fathima Babu at times. Anyway I have a doubt do you have any idea whether the Hiphop Tamizha's sports drama film Natpe Thunai in any way delved into the real life story of the former India field hockey player Ranganathan Francis, because in the film, one old uncle his name goes as R. S. G. Chelladurai of Theri fame apparently tells the story of the ancient hockey player by showing a statue and narrates the story by pronouncing the name as Aranganathan instead of Ranganathan, I wonder whether the filmmakers of Natpe Thunai were denied the permission to use his real name, just like the recent case with Sivakarthikeyan's Parasakthi (upcoming film), because the production company of Sivaji Ganesan's Parasakthi (1952 film) had a legal dispute claiming the title rights while they did not want the legacy of the film to be tainted and even Sivaji's family did not want that name to be reused again. If I can add that piece of history in Natpe Thunai article, it would feel good to revisit the history and get some nostalgia about it. Abishe (talk) 15:58, 12 February 2025 (UTC) [reply ]
- Based on the internet, you can add that Ranganathan Francis bit to Natpe Thunai article although it is already mentioned in the Francis article in the Legacy section. You can use these two sources [4] [5] (a hockey stadium was built in the Klinjal Medu area of Pondi Karaikal by a martyr named Aranganathan Aiya, who played hockey and won the hockey game and gave it to the people of that village. A foreign builder has built a historic hockey stadium in Karaikal, where a river meets the sea, which was fought and saved by martyr Aranganathan).
To answer your question
[edit ]Which was TSR Srinivasan's first film? It was Aranmanai (2014). My previous answer was wrong. I knew it had to be in another interview you didn't link. As per the films, he did after Aranmanai (2014) in crowd artist roles, only God knows. DareshMohan (talk) 07:07, 17 February 2025 (UTC) [reply ]
@DareshMohan: Sorry I couldn't reply to your message on Ranganathan Francis thing, as I was preparing for Table topic contest as part of Toastmasters International's affliated local club. Damn I did not have any idea whether TSR Srinivasan had featured in Aranmanai , because I thought apart from Idhayam, I had a notion that Vindhai would have been his first major film where he gets a brief role. - Article request: is Naga Vishal notable? [6] [7]. He also played a very minor role with his KD costar (Mu Ramaswamy) whom he calls thatha" in Kombu Vatcha Singamda. DareshMohan (talk) 03:10, 23 February 2025 (UTC) [reply ]
- @DareshMohan: Naga Vishal is a child actor and probably he may fall short of WP:GNG guidelines. He still has a long way to go and I wonder the subject is sufficient to ha s a noteworthy article. I think he has done only handful of films and it may be too early to write about him. Abishe (talk) 11:59, 26 February 2025 (UTC) [reply ]
- No problem, can you write the content for the article Draft:Goundamani and Senthil, I only know of their banana comedy. DareshMohan (talk) 16:31, 26 February 2025 (UTC) [reply ]
- Great work on TSR Srinivasan, he even made a non-speaking cameo in Game Changer (Shankar film; he came in Indian 2 also). The black spot on his head must be from the injury mentioned in one of the YouTube interviews. DareshMohan (talk) 01:25, 9 March 2025 (UTC) [reply ]

- @DareshMohan: Looks like it's the end of the road for me in Wikipedia. All good things must come to an end. I am serving a life ban from Wikipedia for some copyright infringement issues and my writing style also did not meet the expected standards. I am not allowed to edit or write articles anymore and I can only edit talk pages of articles, users. I don't think that i can manage to make any meaningful contributions in the future and it all depends on admin to revert the ban for me to have a smooth comeback. Copyright violations and other issues
[edit ]Hi, it seems that you are still adding copyright violations, despite previous warnings not to do this. I don't get why you are still autopatrolled, considering the ongoing issues.
For example, in Draft:ACUMER (which I draftified for this reason and because it had other issues with neutrality and fact-checking as well), you wrote
- "a proposed unified financial messaging system that would facilitate faster and more efficient inter-bank financial settlements between member countries within the ACU network."
In the source[8] (not the source given with that sentence, but one used elsewhere), we find:
- "a proposed unified financial messaging system that would facilitate faster and more efficient inter-bank settlements between member countries within the ACU network."
Simply adding one (unnecessary) word doesn't magically make this policy-compliant. Similarly, putting "focus on the implementation of ACUMER as the tailor made platform in the process of facilitation of payment systems for cross-border transactions." instead of "focused on the implementation of ACUMER, the facilitation of payment systems for cross-border transactions." is still a copyright violation. As is "focused on introducing digital currency and simplifying the cross-border transaction method" instead of "focused on introducing digital currency and simplifying the cross-border transaction method."
And then we have Draft:Acumer polymer (which I just moved to draft space).
"Acumer polymer also simply known as Acumer is a typical flagship brand of polymer manufactured by Dow Chemical Company according to a quick Google search supported by a verified claim through Artificial Intelligence" (emphasis mine). I'll head back to ANI to at the very least get your autopatrolled right removed, no idea if this will satisfy people or if this stunning display of WP:CIR will lead to a mainspace block. I have raised your edits and possible sanctions at WP:ANI#Copyvio and WP:CIR issues from user Abishe. You are invited to comment there. Fram (talk) 12:58, 26 February 2025 (UTC) [reply ]
- Because of the issues raised by Fram above, I have removed your ability to edit articles pending discussion on whether you can participate more in accordance with Wikipedia community norms. "According to Google and ChatGPT", for example, is Right Out. --SarekOfVulcan (talk) 15:26, 26 February 2025 (UTC) [reply ]

WikiCup 2025 March newsletter
[edit ]The first round of the 2025 WikiCup ended on 26 February. As a reminder, we are no longer disqualifying the lowest-scoring contestants; everyone who competed in round 1 will advance to round 2 unless they have withdrawn or been banned from Wikipedia. Instead, the contestants with the highest round-point totals now receive tournament points at the end of each round. Unlike the round points in the main WikiCup table, which are reset at the end of each round, tournament points are carried over between rounds and can only be earned if a competitor is among the top 16 round-point scorers. This table shows all competitors who have received tournament points so far.
Round 1 was very competitive compared with previous years; two contestants scored more than 1,000 round points, and the top 16 contestants all scored more than 500 round points. The following competitors scored more than 800 round points:
- English Island, South Australia Gog the Mild (submissions) with 1,168 round points, mainly from 4 featured articles and 4 good articles on old military history, in addition to an assortment of GA and FA reviews.
- Generalissima (submissions) with 1,095 round points, mainly from 2 FAs, 2 featured lists, 8 GAs, and 16 Did You Know articles mainly on historical topics.
- Delaware BeanieFan11 (submissions), with 866 round points from 20 GAs, 23 DYKs, and 2 In the News articles primarily about athletes.
- Sammi Brie (submissions), with 846 round points from 16 GAs about radio and TV stations, 45 GA reviews, and 3 DYKs.
- Canada Hey man im josh (submissions), with 816 round points from 5 FLs about sports and Olympic topics, 46 FL reviews, 3 ITN articles, and a large number of bonus points.
- Italy MaranoFan (submissions), with 815 round points primarily from 3 FAs and 1 GA about music, in addition to 9 article reviews.
The full scores for round 1 can be seen here. During this round, contestants have claimed 18 featured articles, 26 featured lists, 1 featured-topic article, 197 good articles, 38 good-topic articles and more than 100 Did You Know articles. In addition, competitors have worked on 23 In the News articles, and they have conducted nearly 550 reviews.
Remember that any content promoted after 26 February but before the start of Round 2 can be claimed in Round 2, which begins on 1 March. Invitations for collaborative writing efforts or any other discussion of potentially interesting work is always welcome on the WikiCup talk page. Remember, if two or more WikiCup competitors have done significant work on an article, all can claim points. If you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is at good article candidates, a featured process, or anywhere else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews Needed. If you want to help out with the WikiCup, feel free to review one of the nominations listed on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews Needed. Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages. Good luck!
