DYK for Vitamin E

[edit ]

I see that you have shortened the ALT1 hook for Vitamin E. I accept this, but do prefer the longer version of ALT1 or the primary proposed hook about vitamin E and vaping injury. David notMD (talk) 11:17, 21 December 2024 (UTC) [reply ]

@David notMD: Shorter hooks tend to be more effective, which is why I trimmed it. I'm also surprised ALT1 wasn't selected (with the caveat that I'd have yeeted everything between "used" and "cartridges"), but I don't feel strongly enough either way.--Laun chba ller 13:55, 21 December 2024 (UTC) [reply ]
I defer to you. If the curious are prompted to go to the article after seeing the trimmed version they will find the explanation in the History section. My expectation is a modest bump above average daily viewing. An observation: on the science-related articles I have raised to GA - the other vitamins and others - there is a consistent dip in views per day on weekends. I attribute this to more viewing during the week from students doing homework assignments. David notMD (talk) 14:41, 21 December 2024 (UTC) [reply ]

BLP / source concern

[edit ]

Hi Launchballer: Since you've been enforcing the deprecation of some media sources on trans issues, I wonder if I can get a second opinion from you on Brooke Slusser, which was created while I was expanding the Spartans volleyball article. I've tagged it for notability and explained why at some length on the talk page. Note in addition that of the cited sources, several are Fox News, one is the Telegraph, and the two "Texas sues ..." are the same AP article (and only tangentially related). I think it should be redirected to the Spartans volleyball article; I don't think it's bad enough to PROD (there is one RS article about her cited, SF Chronicle). Do you think I need to go through the BLP noticeboard or do you share my feeling this should just be redirected? Yngvadottir (talk) 21:18, 1 January 2025 (UTC) [reply ]

@Yngvadottir: I tend to leave articles I'm not planning on driveby DYKing alone, but my feeling is that that's probably a WP:BLP1E. I'd redirect it and see if anyone bites.--Laun chba ller 22:09, 1 January 2025 (UTC) [reply ]

Hi Launchballer, just letting you know that the supposed previous record of 919 men is disbuted in The Atlantic article: Across the internet, you can find the rumor that the record is currently held by Lisa Sparks—more than 900 times, in 2004—but Sparks herself has written that it was about 150. There's more that you could add from this article; writer Helen Lewis makes an incisive point connecting 100 Men, and Internet pornography more broadly, to the logical endpoint of liberal feminism and liberalism and deregulation. Burnout

[edit ]

Regarding your comment I hit something of a wall last week after attempting two in a day, I feel your pain. A long time ago, @Valereee gave me some sage advice which I've taken to heart and now pass on to you. Make sure you don't burn out. It's easy to look at something like this and say, "If I don't step in and do another <whatever/>, things are going to break". Been there, done that. It's easy to get sucked into thinking you need to keep the world from crashing and just keep doing more work. It's OK for it to crash. It's not OK for you to burn out. RoySmith (talk) 23:21, 17 January 2025 (UTC) [reply ]

Burnout sucks. When I was burned out a few times, I took breaks of a year and more. I regretted it. SL93 (talk) 00:35, 18 January 2025 (UTC) [reply ]
I burned a couple years ago badly enough that I stopped editing completely for two months. Came back and desysopped, and after a few weeks realized it was the sense of responsibility as an admin to DYK that had burned me out. Decided, regretfully, that I was only going to do my fair share at DYK and resysopped. If a volunteer job is actually important, someone else will step up. If no one steps up, maybe it's not actually important to anyone else. And if it's not important to anyone else, why should I treat it as important enough to burn me out on a hobby I otherwise enjoy very much? Valereee (talk) 12:46, 18 January 2025 (UTC) [reply ]
Thank you all for your comments, I'm feeling slightly better now. Looking at my contributions, having seven GAs taken within the space of a week, several of which hadn't been brought to DYK yet and one of which I had planned on running as a triple nom with two articles I had yet to write, is probably what knocked me out. I'm feeling slightly better now. (I am slightly disinclined to queue sets anyway while one of mine is on deck.)--Laun chba ller 14:42, 19 January 2025 (UTC) [reply ]
I just went to promote a queue and discovered I couldn't because all the queues were already filled! Definitely something to file under "good problems to have". RoySmith (talk) 14:50, 19 January 2025 (UTC) [reply ]
I promoted my first prep to queue, although I had a mishap with a source not initially loading as described on the DYK talk page. I’m glad to be able to help out. SL93 (talk) 15:02, 19 January 2025 (UTC) [reply ]
I'm about ready to get burnout not from preps or queues, but from reviewing hooks. That is only because no one has been promoting hooks that I review, and those nominations just get older and older. I don't want to place nominators in that position. SL93 (talk) 01:27, 23 January 2025 (UTC) [reply ]
Is there a DYKpromoters group ping that you could use when a hook you reviewed needs attention? Or maybe somehow mark such approved hooks so that other promoters, as they're looking for hooks to promote, know a certain one was reviewed by (or nominated by) a regular promoter? Ayup! So glad to see that all of our articles that we nominated for GA have now been promoted!! Was thinking about the discussion that I had about moving James Marriott (musician) to James Marriott and creating a seperate disambig page at James Marriott (disambiguation) a while ago and I believe the mods that reviewed it were completely unreasonable about the move, quoting that one of the Marriott's was more relevant due to writing something called the 'Formulare instrumentarum' which doesn't even show up any results on google, when in comparison the musician Marriott has millions of viewers & has charted in multiple countries? Doesn't really make sense in my eyes haha. Let me know your thoughts! George (talk) 20:53, 20 January 2025 (UTC) [reply ]

Sorry to keep you waiting, I kept getting tongue-tied. I had a look at WP:PRIMARYTOPIC and it says that although there is no single criterion for determining which would belong at James Marriott, the two usual aspects are usage and long-term significance and they're different in this case. I think it could have gone either way and I regret not voting. (That said, Formulare Instrumentarum only seems to appear on Google in Google Books and if it really was that influential, you'd think some secondary coverage would have made Google by now...)--Laun chba ller 00:29, 25 January 2025 (UTC) [reply ]
