Lead: Worth saying that it was the only ship named for the Captain, as you have in the body of the article.

Interwar period: Probably just me being dense, but is there another way to word "cruised for several days as a convoy escort toward the end of World War I" so that it doesn't sound like the end of World War I was a destination?

World War II: Worth saying that the Yorktown was an aircraft carrier and that the San Francisco was a heavy cruiser.
