  • A more extensive discussion of the Galapagos would be useful, as it's the best-known example of the phenomenon.
  • A discussion of phylogenetics and the measurement of species coalescence times might be a good expansion.
  • The "observed examples" link to talk.origins is well-researched and useful as an external link, but surely there's a more academic compilation somewhere?

    • better in a separate section, that then also mentions that it does not depend on any degree of spatial isolation
  • Discussion of pre-zygotic vs. post-zygotic isolation

Other meaning

Speciation is also a term used in analytical chemistry when the aim of the analysis is not (or only partly) to analyse the concentration of an element (e.g. sulphur) but to find out to what extent the element is present in different species (e.g. sulphate, sulphide, thiosulphate, organic sulphur etc). Although related to the subject of ion speciation I would say it is a different subject. Tone copyediting

Hello Chiswick Chap, I appreciate you editing this article to resolve the tone issues. However, the article contains two violations of MOS:QUESTION in the section § Darwin's dilemma: Why do species exist?. One violation is the heading itself, and the other is inside the section. Speciation examples

House sparrows have develped races in North-America. Muskrats are speciating too. Rabbits in Australia (source of the rabbits: Alien Species and Evolution: The Evolutionary Ecology of Exotic Plants, Animals, Microbes, and Interacting Native Species). Evening primroses. Artificial Speciation

As far as I am aware and from what I can find out there are no examples of artificial speciation. None have been induced in the laboratory, and domesticated animals all have wild types with which they can and do interbreed. All of the domesticated animals have or are on the way to being assigned species identical to wild types, with the possible exception of the Bactrian camel. I have thus removed the sentence relating to artificial speciation. I someone can provide good examples I'll reinstate the sentence with the appropriate references. Currently the lede reads:
"New species have been created by animal husbandry, but the dates and methods of the initiation of such species are not clear. Often, the domestic counterpart can still interbreed and produce fertile offspring with its wild ancestor. This is the case with domestic cattle, which can be considered the same species as several varieties of wild ox, gaur, and yak; and with domestic sheep that can interbreed with the mouflon."
This seems internally contradictory. The first sentence states that new species have been created by animal husbandry. The rest of the paragraph indicates that these are not new species as they can interbeed with the wild ancestor. I recommend significant rewording but I'll wait a little while for comment before going ahead.Ordinary Person (talk) 08:10, 30 July 2024 (UTC) [reply ]
