Needs a CC or GNU portrait or picture of him. --The Editor 2 00:32, 14 May 2006 (UTC) Okay, we needed material I'm not quite sure we needed an Irish republican diatribe...have edited the most blatantly p.o.v. comments out, but left the eye witness account in there - others may disagree with the article being taken over by this account, but it is interesting - does need to be referenced though, (at the time, these barbaric floggings were standard practise in the Royal Navy and British Army).Winstonwolfe 04:40, 24 June 2006 (UTC) [reply ]

It is a little odd that the article is taken over by this quote. Why not simply refer people to an article on a related topic, and mention that floggings during this period were barbaric?Sbmackay (talk) 12:12, 6 August 2010 (UTC) [reply ]
I've added material largely drawn from Robert Hughes' The Fatal Shore to the Australian section - I've maintained neutral POV (rather than speculating on Marsden's alleged viciousness or propensity for flogging compared to the standards of the time), but did feel bound to add a memorandum in Marsden's own words which does suggest a strong distaste for Irish Catholics (at least) and seems notable enough for inclusion in that section. I've also done some general tidying up of timelines in the New Zealand section, added macrons where required and so on. Interesting article - I hope the edits are helpful and welcome. samf-nz 00:49, 12 December 2014 (UTC) [reply ]

Could anyone make article about this or only christian missions to Pacific Islands?--Vojvodae ist 09:04, 14 August 2008 (UTC) [reply ]

Anti Catholic or Anti Irish?

[edit ]
My readings of Marsden is that he was in favour of civilized behaviour and did not see this in Irish convicts. He was not alone in this. Like seamen in whalers, they were the lowest of the low. Many poor Irish lived on the point of starvation normally, so it did not take much to tip the balance into lawlessness. Antagonism between Irish and English goes back along long way. In England the poor could generally get jobs in factories but these didnt exist in most parts of Ireland. It was the free migrants who took to attacking aboriginees . Marsden tried to reign this is -without much success ,as the aboriginees kept attacking settlers. If he had attacked French Catholics as well you could write he was anti Catholic but the evidence is that he was more anti Irish which was a fairly common English sentiment. The British saw the French as "defeated" and they had to feed on scraps in the Pacific but the French were very cunning -sending a captain who pretended to be "ship wrecked" near Sydney when in fact they werent and staying on to take detailed intelligence about Sydney to pass on to the French government. The captain had been sailing up and down the east coast looking at harbours, rivers, sources of timber etc with an eye to exploitation.115.188.178.77 (talk) 07:38, 25 January 2016 (UTC) [reply ]
