History: who died childless?

[edit ]

The first paragraph under 'History' includes: "Dying childless, his wife became the heir to the Mortlock fortune, ..." As it is written, this means 'his wife' died childless and in doing so became the heir; which makes no sense at all. An introductory phrase in the form of a participal with no mention of who did the action specified by the participle (such as 'Dying childless, ...') *must* refer to something done by the subject of the sentence, who in this case is 'his wife'.

Furthermore, an heir becomes an heir *before* the owner's death; and on the death of the owner, by inheriting the property (or status), ceases to be the heir and becomes the new owner.

Hence I suspect it should read something like: "When [name (not sure who)] died childless, his wife inherited ...". Can someone better acquainted with the history insert the correct name? 203.23.239.198 (talk) 23:23, 16 November 2024 (UTC) [reply ]
