Personality

[edit ]

The comment below may seem a bit subjective, but it gets to certain truths about this character.

J.B. is an intelligent and attractive broadcaster with a very pleasant voice. She has narrated and presented many BBC programs because of these characteristics. She started off in the late 1960's on TV and appeared somewhat naive and overly posh at first; but she then gradually matured to be a consumate TV program presenter. I first saw her in Under the Microscope and she was good at asking the right questions. One of the guests of the program was Richard Dawkins.

University

[edit ]

What did she actually study at Cambridge - was it journalism? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 172.159.114.141 (talk) 14:33, 29 April 2008 (UTC) [reply ]

According to her autobiography [1] , Joan Bakewell read Economics in her first year, switching to History in her second. Journalism would not have been a Cambridge Tripos subject in the 1950s (and I doubt if it is today).--Porlq (talk) 20:26, 11 March 2009 (UTC) [reply ]

Frank Dickens

[edit ]

The late Frank Dickens (cartoonist of 'Bristow') used to try to impress young ladies he was interested in with an hilarious account of his (unsuccessful) attempt to seduce Joan Bakewell - perhaps some day it can be told! 109.144.221.106 (talk) 22:42, 30 May 2017 (UTC) [reply ]

Joan BakewellJoan Bakewell, Baroness Bakewell .

Oppose - Best known as a television presenter and journalist and not as a peer. Also no disambiguation is required for this article title.--Lucy-marie (talk) 14:44, 1 February 2011 (UTC) [reply ]
Support. WP:NCPEER is quite clear. This peeress is no longer wholly or exclusively known by her pre-peerage nomenclature. Kittybrewster 15:15, 1 February 2011 (UTC) [reply ]
Oppose - WP:NCPEER is not clear at all. Even in straightforward cases it suggests the peerage title is only "usually" included. In this case, Bakewell is almost exclusively known by her personal name and uses it professionally. The article already references her peerage appropriately without the need for a confusing title change that also then entails a disambiguation page. Alistair Stevenson (talk) 15:52, 1 February 2011 (UTC) [reply ]
Oppose for now. High-profile broadcaster known as "Joan Bakewell". This may change if she is pro, mine nt in the House of Lords, but for now she is not known by her title. --BrownHairedGirl (talk) • (contribs) 20:50, 1 February 2011 (UTC) [reply ]

Self-Isolation

[edit ]

As of March 2020 Bakewell is in self-isolation due to COVID-19. Should this be mentioned? Robin S. Taylor (talk) 12:43, 17 March 2020 (UTC) [reply ]
