[edit ]I've been unable to find the source, anywhere online, of "A 1952 graduate of the Naval Academy recalls of his Youngster (sophomore) cruise to England in the summer of 1949 aboard the USS Missouri...". Why?
[edit ]It sounds like this is essentially a process of sanding the deck. What does this accomplish aside from sanding of a layer of deck? (I suppose that would keep splinters to a minimum.) —Ben FrantzDale 23:08, 5 June 2007 (UTC) [reply ]
Holystoning in 1958
[edit ]As part of a working party formed for the purpose, I personally and repeatedly holystoned the deck of USS Canberra (CAG-2) on a midshipman cruise to Northern Europe in the summer of 1958. I may even have a reliable source in the form of a cruise book. As I remember it, the deck was teak over steel, and the holystoning cleaned the teak and whitened it.
