There has been much more written about the American Missionary Society and all its work; this article needs more current sources than a 1926 book. It was supported by three major Protestant denominations that had been active in abolitionism.Parkwells (talk) 16:02, 21 July 2011 (UTC) [reply ]

I put in a reference saying that the Society was run by the Methodist Episcopal (later plain ol' Methodist) church. It seems to contradict the Congregationalist claims, but I suspect that the 2 sets of claims just highlight the various contributions of the different groups, different forms and leadership over time, and perhaps a sometimes chaotic situation.
