In the article for the comic version, there is an explanation for the title. While a complete interpretation of the spiritual background of the movie (Daoism/Confucianism) is inappropriate, this might be interesting:

"The original title comes from two of the characters' names: Lo and Jen. Lo's name is Luo Tsiao Hu. Tsiao Hu means "little tiger". Jen's name is Yu Jiao Long. Jiao Long means "delicate dragon". "Crouching tiger, hidden dragon" (卧虎藏龙) is also chengyu and appears to refer to Zhang Ziyi's character Jen (since she secretly learnt those martial arts). However, I currently have no source for this except this YouTube video. I'll try to dig up something better, but if ther's anybody else who can find a reference, pleae don't hold back ;-) (Chinese-chengyu.com doesn't list this chengyu; Chinesisch-Lernen.org explains the chengyu only in Chinese.) --ChristopheS (talk) 11:32, 8 June 2015 (UTC) [reply ]

Do we have any citation for when the film is supposed to be set? The plot claims 1778, but there is no source for that. Looking through the talk archives, there is a claim that it is Qing Dynasty (due to the clothes), and more specifically 1778 (based on a dated pass). However, there is also a claim made in the same discussion that according to the director it isn't supposed to be set in any particular time. At the moment, there isn't any source for the date givenin the actual article. (In fact, there are a lot of claims made in the article that have no sources given). That movie is set in Qing dynasty is mentioned in many publications on the movie. You probably can also get the time setting from the original novel. Not sure about the specific 1778, but picking the 18th century for the Qing fits the general theme (since after 1800 there is increasing western influences and changes in the countryside).
