Stub

[edit ]

I have added stub templates to this article, because there is far too little on the scope of the Board's responsibilities in the 18th century. I have examining the minutes of the Board in Public Record Office for 1750 to 1790, and it is clear to me that there is much more to be said. However, I was looking for evidence on contractors for cannon, shot, and muskets, not at the activities of the board, and am thus not qualified to add more than I have done. Improvement

[edit ]

I was lured here from Broad arrow and made some improvements but have given up for the moment due to the lack of decent sources and the fact that they clash in terms of dates and crucial info etc. Mhicaoidh (talk) 10:52, 12 July 2008 (UTC) [reply ]

Explosives as Fog Horn

[edit ]

I would like to know more about the role of the Board of Ordnance and the Royal Artillery in the colony of Newfoundland, specifically at Fort Amherst. This fort, and other posts nearby, were established for military defense of the harbor. A gunner with the Royal Artillery was responsible for discharging the foghorn every 30 minutes when Cape Spear was shrouded in fog. (1) Are there records to show what type of cannon or gun was used for the purpose of a foghorn at that time? I have read letters of the lighthouse administration complaining of the positioning of the gun, that the blasts were damaging the windows of the lighthouse, and potentially could damage the lighting apparatus. (2) Are there any records to show what unit/personnel, specifically Joseph Sandiford, was stationed there approx. around 1836-1837? This was prior to early 1838, as there are court records that Sandiford was back in England by 1838, when his boots were stolen from the barracks in Woolwich. Thanks!
