Talk:BMW 3 Series Compact

I mean, there have never existed a BMW product series named "Compact", it was just a subtype of a 3 Series (like Sedan/Saloon, Coupe and Touring/Station Wagon). For example, one could create an article "BMW Coupe" and write about 6 and 8 Series, Z3, Z4 and Z8 series, 3 Coupe etc. (this seems obviously less practical since much more BMW's were in the Coupe then Compact form; hope this helps understanding my point). —Preceding unsigned comment added by Arny (talk • contribs) 06:00, 3 September 2008 (UTC) [reply ]

The car was refered to and sold as the BMW compact, and its mechanically different to it's equivelent 3 series counterparts. BMW don't sell any of the cars you've mentioned as the BMW Coupé, and the Z series were all designed as roadsters (The Z8 wasn't built as a Coupé (And you forgot the M1 and 6 series).(82.3.46.83 (talk) 16:41, 1 April 2009 (UTC))[reply ]

Ok, I've mixed up some roadsters with coupes, my bad. ;) Anyway, I've never heard of a "BMW Compact" model, they were always "3-series compacts", and an example from the model range would be: 318i sedan, 318is coupe, 318ti compact. There are no models named "BMW Sedan", "BMW Coupe" nor AFAIK "BMW Compact". The abovementioned examples were always "3-Series Sedan", "3-Series Coupe" and "3-Series Compact", as they were simply variants of the 3-Series. Now, I admit a possibility that there were areas in the world where Compacts were indeed marketed as a different model from 3-Series (North America maybe?), however I'm not familiar with that as in Europe that wasn't a case. arny (talk) 09:10, 5 October 2009 (UTC) [reply ]

The article states that this car "now has a cult following in Europe". Where's the source for this? I have more than a passing interest in cars, owners' clubs and the like, am a BMW owner and even live in Europe but have never known the Compact to be viewed as anything other than a costed-down 3 Series.

I find the recent deletions of valid information (especially regarding North American models and interior details) to be unconstructive and wish to change them back. The prices should be removed because of policies like WP:NOPRICES and WP:NOTSALES. Stuff like the exact list of options included in the "sport package" or whatever package is also covered under WP:NOTSALES, or WP:NOTCATALOG. We could give a general summary of what sort of packages or options were offered, but a detailed rundown does not belong in an encyclopedia. Some rando's options, like " very popular", "reasonably priced, "consumers desired a less expensive BMW, those in North America were not fond of the liftback body style.", "very short^{[opinion ]} 4-year run". Unsourced facts like "to make the car compliant with OBD-II, the engine was replaced by the 1.9 litre" are no loss if there's no source.

I don't see much worth keeping. If deleting this is going to actually "destroy information", that means that the information exists nowhere except here on Wikipedia. If it doesn't exist elsewhere, then it is not verifiable. Wikipedia does not keep anything that isn't verifiable. If you have published sources you can cite, you could put some of these facts back. If the opinions were published by a reputable pundit or auto industry analyist, we could include them with an in-text citation where we name that person in the text. --Dennis Bratland (talk) 23:15, 10 September 2017 (UTC) [reply ]

I check pages listed in Category:Pages with incorrect ref formatting to try to fix reference errors. One of the things I do is look for content for orphaned references in wikilinked articles. I have found content for some of BMW 3 Series Compact's orphans, the problem is that I found more than one version. I can't determine which (if any) is correct for this article, so I am asking for a sentient editor to look it over and copy the correct ref content into this article.
