Day 1 - LHA 2026 Conference at DennyGibson.com
Getting to my first night's destination would be largely via expressways.
I slipped a few miles off one of them for breakfast at the
Nutcracker Family Restaurant. The first two pictures
were taken from my seat at the counter. I got up to take the third one to
get a better view of the Chicago Coin Band Box next to just a few of the
things that give the place its name. I also took a picture of
my meal from that seat.
At Greensburg, PA, I left the expressways for US-30/Lincoln Highway. The
only stop I made was at the big pull-off where the Ship Hotel once stood.
A sign and the view are all that's there now.
I took a drive into Bedford to check out a couple of landmarks. The Coffee
Pot is in need of some paint.
Dunkle Gulf is in need of a purpose. The station closed in 2023 when owner
Jack Dunkle died, and has been stripped of its pumps. Even the concrete
island where they once stood is gone.
Then it was back toward the Motor Court and dinner at
Jean Bonnet
Tavern. People who think that beer looks rather light for me (It's Sip
O Summer from Forbes Trail Brewing just up the road.) might be reassured
by the
Oskar Blue Porter I had for dessert.
I closed out the day fireside with LMC owners Avery and Kyle. Avery's
g-g-grandfather was one of the motel's original builders and owners. Looks
like the place is in good hands.
