Back in Buckeye Land
June 27, 2026 (day 9)
Rain on the last day of a road trip is almost always easy to tolerate, and
this rain even made some well timed pauses. I'm home and dry.
June 26, 2026 (day 8)
The conference wrapped up, and I headed east out of York, seeing three
Corvairs, one Lincoln, and a bunch of elephants along the way. I halfway
made up for a two-year-old goof, then ended the day with fire trucks
galore.
June 25, 2026 (day 7)
Buses got us to and from the start and end of a round trip on a train. We
worked in a picnic lunch then ended the day with the conference's awards
banquet.
June 24, 2026 (day 6)
The day started with the association's annual meeting. Entertainment and
enlightenment immediately followed. I finished the day with an art
exhibit.
June 23, 2026 (day 5)
During the twelve hours between departure and return, we took in two
excellent museums and an advertisement that can be lived in.
June 22, 2026 (day 4)
Missing a turn apparently upset my Garmin so that I had to eventually
turn to Google Maps to dodge a two-hour detour in the wrong direction. But
I made it to the hotel on time, then onto the conference opening reception
in a nearby ballroom.
June 21, 2026 (day 3)
I have never compiled a formal bucket list, but if I had, Lucy the
Elephant would certainly have been on it. Not anymore. And I rode that
other US Highway ferry on the way.
June 20, 2026 (day 2)
It was a relocation day with no exciting stops, but I can tell you what I
ate and drank and where I'm sleeping.
June 19, 2026 (day 1)
It was pretty much expressway with few stops as I drove to my overnight,
but I did take a peek at some Lincoln Highway landmarks.
Prelude - September 27, 2025
I didn't make it to the Lincoln Highway Association Conference in
Ogallala, NE, this year. Distance and timing were both factors. It's less
than half as far away next year, and barring last minute emergencies, the
schedule is clear. The 2026 conference will be in Pennsylvania, and looks
to be a special one with tie-ins to the nation's 250th. By the end of the
2025 conference, rather firm plans were announced and registration was
opened. A dedicated website, Lincoln250PA, has been established. My registration is
in, my hotel booked, and I'm looking forward to a conference they've named
"Road to Independence".
