Letzte Änderungen

  • In den letzten Änderungen und deiner Beobachtungsliste in der deutschen Wikipedia werden nun Änderungen an Kategorien angezeigt. Der Plan ist, dieses Feature zu Wikimedia Commons und andere Wikipedias nächste Woche hinzuzufügen. [1] [2]
  • Administratoren können beliebige Einträge einer Seite mit Versionslöschungen verstecken. Nun gibt es dort einen Button "alle", "keine" und "umkehren" in SpezialːLog. Die Versionsgeschichte wird die selben Buttons bald bekommen. Wikis, die dies bisher mit JavaScript getan haben, sind dann nun in der Lage diesen Code zu entfernen. [3]

Änderungen diese Woche

  • Du wirst nun in der Lage zu sein, Einzelnachweise zu sehen, wenn du dir die Vorschau eines Abschnittes anzeigen lässt, wenn du eine Seite bearbeitest. Dies passiert auch. wenn sich kein <references /> Tag in dem Abschnitt befindet. [4]
  • Die neue MediaWiki-Version wird ab dem 16. Januar auf den Testwikis und MediaWiki.org, ab dem 27. Januar auf Wikipedia-fremden Wikis und einigen Wikipedias, und ab dem 28. Januar auf allen Wikipedias verfügbar sein (Kalender).

Künftige Änderungen

  • Es gibt nun eine Erweiterung mit dem Namen ArticlePlaceholder. Diese Erweiterung kann Inhalt in der Wikipedia von Wikidata gengerieren, sofern es noch keinen Wikipedia-Artikel gibt. Es gibt allerdings eine Markierung, um den Leser daran zu erinnern, das es nicht ein Artikel ist, zudem fragt diese Meldung den Leser, ob er nicht einen erstellen möchte. Die Entwickler halten momentan Ausschau nach kleineren Wikipedias, die diese Erweiterung testen möchten. [5]
  • Das OTRS-System wird geupgradet werden. Der Plan ist, dies am 3 Februar um 08:00 (UTC) zu tun. Der Prozess wird etwa 6 bis 8 Stunden in Anspruch nehmen. OTRS wird während wieder Zeit nicht erreichbar sein. [6]
  • Benutzern wird automatisch gratuliert werden, falls sie eine gewisse Zahl an Edits erreichen. [7]

Probleme

  • Seiten mit Domain wikimedia.org wurden durch einen Fehler am 26. Januar auf das Wikimedia Foundation Wiki weitergeleitet, meta und Commons waren davon betroffen. Nach einer Stunde war der Fehler behoben. [8]
  • Einige Benutzer hatten Probleme beim Ein- und Ausloggen um den 22 Januar. Bots hatten ebenfalls Probleme, und Vorschauen arbeiteten nicht korrekt. Diese Probleme entstanden durch die neue Komponente SessionManager. Die Probleme wurden am 23. Januar durch das zurücksetzen auf die vorherige MediaWiki Version gelöst. [9] [10]

Änderungen diese Woche

  • Die Versionsgeschichte wird einen Hilfe-Link bekommen. Dieser wird auf Help:Page history zeigen (Seite auf meta). Wikis können den Link durch einen Link auf ihre lokale Seite ersetzen. [12]
  • Benachrichtigungen werden nur einen Teil des Seitentitels anzeigen, wenn er sehr lang ist. Ebenso gibt es nun eine andere Möglichkeit Benachrichtigungen als gelesen zu markieren. [13] [14]
  • Die Eingabemethode Universal Language Selector funktioniert jetzt auch beim Visual Editor. Das bedeutet, dass viele, die in nicht-lateinischen Schriften schreiben, den Visual Editor nun benutzen können. [15]
  • Der Visual Editor wird zusätzliche Tools zum Bearbeiten von Tabellen erhalten. Man kann Zeilen und Spalten in einer Tabelle verschieben und Teile einer Tabelle kopieren, um neue zu Erstellen. Man kann außerdem mehrere Zellen auf einmal kopieren. [16] [17] [18]
  • Der Visual Editor zeigt jetzt eine Warnmeldung an, wenn man die Seite ohne zu Speichern verlässt. Nicht-englischsprachige Wikis benötigen möglicherweise eine Übersetzung der Meldung. [19] [20]
  • Die neue MediaWiki-Version wird ab dem 2. Februar auf den Testwikis und MediaWiki.org, ab dem 3. Februar auf Wikipedia-fremden Wikis und einigen Wikipedias, und ab dem 4. Februar auf allen Wikipedias verfügbar sein (Kalender).

  • Syntax Highlight Unterstützung ist nun für 53 weitere Programmiersprachen verfügbar. [22]

  • RESTBase benutzt nun scrub_wikitext statt scrubWikitext. [24]

  • Wikidata besitzt nun einen Datentyp der sich "math" nennt. Er wird für Formeln genutzt. [25] [26]

  • Other sites will be able to tell when visitors come from links on Wikipedia and other Wikimedia sites. They used to be able to do this until we started using forced HTTPS in June 2015. This is planned to happen on 15 February. [27] [28]
  • Wikidata wird einen neuen Datentyp mit dem Namen "external-id" haben. Er wird für Verweise auf externe Ressourcen verwendet werden. Er wird am 16. Februar aktiviert werden. Einige Eigenschaften werden auf den neuen Datentyp umgestellt werden. [29] [30] [31]

  • Du kannst nun auf der mobilen Version Seiten bearbeiten, ohne das du dafür JavaScript benötigst. [32]
  • Die Math Erweiterung kann nun dafür benutzt werden chemische Formeln darzustellen. [33]

Probleme

  • Eine Autoren waren als andere Benutzer eingeloggt, aufgrund eines Fehlers. Aus Sicherheitsgründen wurde jeder am 9. Februar ausgeloggt. Falls du diesen Fehler gesehen hast, kannst du ihn melden. [34] [35]

Änderungen diese Woche

  • Es gibt nun ein beta-feature, dass Links zu dem Thema auf andere Wikimedia Projekte hinzufügt. Der plan war, das es die Beta-Phase verlässt, und Ende Januar für jeden eingeschaltet wird. Dies wird stattdessen am 16. Februar passieren. Wikis, die dies nicht möchten, können sich dafür entscheiden es zu deaktivieren. [36] [37]
  • Cross-wiki notifications werden als ein Beta-Feature auf Wikidata, MediaWiki. Commons und allen Wikis auf Hebräisch und Französisch ab dem 19. Februar verfügbar sein. [38]

  • Die Suchfunktion auf Wikimedia Wikis wird eine Vervollständigungsautomatik bekommen, die versucht die richtigen Seiten zu finden, während der Benutzer den Suchbegriff einfügt. Ebenfalls wird versucht, auch Typos zu detektieren. Dies wird wohl im März eingeführt, momentan befindet es sich in der Beta-Phase. [39]

Letzte Änderungen

  • Dank der Graph Erweiterung und der Pageview API haben wir nun die {{Graph:PageViews}} Vorlange, die es erlauben eine Abrufstatistik in Seiten in Wikis einzubinden. Hier gibt es die Beispiele.
  • Die Capiunto Erweiterung ist nun auf dem Testwiki installiert. Capiunto hat die Möglichkeit zusammen mit Scribunto flexible Infoboxen anzubieten, es generiert HTML Code für Infobox Features, wie z.B. Header und Reihen. Die Erweiterung ist dafür entwickelt, saubere und moderne Infoboxen anzubieten, die mit Daten aus Wikidata gefüllt sind, leicht benutzbar über alle Wikis sind, zudem leicht ausbaubar.
  • Der VisualEditor folgt nun der TemplateData Einstellung format, was im November angekündigt wurde. Wenn du einen Edit machst, oder eine Vorlage nutzt, wird der Wikitext in ein oder zwei Tagen verlegt werden. [45] [46]
  • Die Ordnung der Parameter bzw. deren Format wird nun in TemplateData berücksichtigt, so wie es in der Vorlage definiert ist. [47] [48]

Änderungen diese Woche

  • Auf Wikis, wo der VisualEditor in der ein Tab Mode aktiviert ist, können rote Links den VisualEditor statt des Wikitexteditors öffnen, dies ist von den Einstellungen des Benutzers abhängig. [49]
  • Die Warnung nicht eingeloggt zu sein wird nun im Stile eine Warnungsbox angezeigt werden, sowohl im Wikitext, als auch im VisualEditor. [50]
  • Parsoid wurde geupeted, um einigen HTML 5 Spezifikationen zu entsprechen. [51]

  • Die austrende exekutiv Direktoring Lila Tretikov wird fragen auf der Seite Knowledge Engine FAQ entgegen nehmen, da viel über das Projekt gesprochen wurde. [52]

Recent changes

  • Files on Wikimedia Commons can now be 2 GB big. The old limit was 1 GB. [53]
  • Welcome notifications now have a different symbol. English Wikipedia already had this one. [54]
  • The Wikimedia memory cache servers in the Eqiad cluster have now been upgraded to Debian 8 (Jessie). Some users might have had to log in again because of this. [55]
  • It is now easier to categorize images uploaded to Wikimedia Commons in the Commons Android app. [56]
  • Bare attributes in tags now parse according to the HTML5 specifications. <pages from= to= section=1> will parse as <pages from="to=" section="1"> instead of <pages from="" to="" section="1"> as it used to. Please use <pages from="" to="" section=1> or <pages section=1> instead. This is mostly likely to affect pages on Wikisource projects. [57]

Problems

  • Phabricator has been a bit unstable lately. This should be fixed now. [58]
  • The PageView API shows wrong data between 23 February and 29 February for pages with special characters in their title. [59]
  • The parsing change mentioned above caused a large number of pages to break, especially on Wikisource. [60]
  • You may see falsely formatted edit links on both mobile and desktop devices. Mobile devices can also show incorrect formatted table of contents. This should be fixed soon. [61]
  • Templates using TemplateData that were edited with the visual editor might have some problems in wikitext mode. This can be fixed by editing and saving the page by using the visual editor without making any changes. [62]

Changes this week

  • Cross-wiki notifications will be enabled as a beta feature on all wikis on 10 March. You will be able to get notifications when something happens on another Wikimedia wiki. [63]
  • The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 8 March. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 9 March. It will be on all wikis from 10 March (calendar).
  • Wikivoyages will get the Kartographer extension. Kartographer will allow <mapframe> and <maplink> tags in an article to insert an interactive map and overlay it with different markers. You can add ideas and suggestions to the Maps talk page. If you find any bugs, you can report them in Phabricator. [64]

Future changes

  • The buttons in interfaces will be simplified. Instead of white, red, green and blue buttons, in future there will only be white, red and blue ones. [65]
  • The Wikimedia technical operations team plans to do some server work on 22 March. This could cause some problems, for example make it possible to read but not edit the Wikimedia wikis for a short period of time. The date for this might change. [66]

  • The mobile web interface no longer suggests HiDPI thumbnails. This is to take up less bandwidth on slow or expensive connections. [67]
  • The search engine on wikipedia.org has been updated. [68]

Changes this week

  • Wikimedia has a new backup data center in Dallas. Because of planned work on this, you will be able to read but not edit the wikis for a short period of time on both 22 March and 24 March. This could be postponed to April 18. You might lose edits if you try to save during this time. Because of a test, there will also be a couple of minutes where you can't edit the wikis on 15 March starting 07:00 UTC. You can read more about the server work. There will be more notifications and updates about this.
  • Administrators and other users with advanced permissions will need to have an 8-byte long passwords. This change takes place on 15 March. Users with too short passwords will be asked to change password the next time they log in. This was decided in a discussion on Meta and is because they can use tools that can hurt the wikis. [69]
  • The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 15 March. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 16 March. It will be on all wikis from 17 March (calendar).

Probleme

  • Wikimedia hat einen neuen Backup Center in Dallas. Die Wikimedia Technologie-Abeteilung plante, ihn diese Woche zu testen. Dies passiert allerdings erst in der Woche vom 18. April. Hier kannst du mehr über Arbeit mit den Servern lesen. Es wird mehr Benahcrichtigungen und Updates über dieses Event geben.
  • In Firefox kam es manchmal dazu, das er VisualEditor einfach an das Ende der Seite gesprungen ist, wenn du mit einem Doppelklick eine Tabelle angeklickt hast, dieses Problem tritt nun nicht mehr auf. [71]

  • Nachweise zu Citoid hinzufügen funktionierte für 6 Stunden am 24 März nicht, wurde dann aber wieder behoben. [77]

Änderungen dieser Woche

  • Die neue MediaWiki-Version wird ab dem 29. März auf den Testwikis und MediaWiki.org, ab dem 30. März auf Wikipedia-fremden Wikis und einigen Wikipedias, und ab dem 31. März auf allen Wikipedias verfügbar sein (Kalender).
  • Du wirst nun in der Lage sein den Kopf und das Ende der Babel-Boxen zu entfernen. Das macht es leichter, sie mit anderen Benutzerboxen zu verwenden. [78]

  • Commons wird bald verbesserten Zugang zu Daten aus Wikidata haben. Es wird dann möglich sein, Zugang auf alle Daten über alle Konzepte auf jeder Seite auf Commons zu haben. Unterstützung beim Testen im Beta-Cluster ist geschätzt. [79]
  • Wikibits.js wird nicht mehr standartmäßig geladen ab April 2016. Die Gadget und Skript-Autoren sollten ihren Code bereits seit den vorherigen Ankündigungen umgestellt haben, aber es gibt eine andere Möglichkeit zu migrieren, falls benötigt. Details findest du auf der Mailingliste wikitech-l.

  • The visual editor can generate wikicode with image options in your language. Examples of image options are "thumb" or "left". You can ask to change to options in your language in Phabricator. [82] [83]
  • Wiktionaries and Wikisources can now use the visual editor. It is an opt-in beta feature. It still needs development to work better with these projects. [84] [85]
  • ORES is using new models. Tools that use ORES' predictions can behave strangely. ORES also has a new API. [86]
  • The visual editor now supports classical Greek characters. [87]

Problems

  • There was a bug when you used keyboard arrows in templates in the visual editor. This has now been fixed. [88]

Probleme

  • Wikimedia hat letzte Woche das neue Backup-Center in Dallas, Texas, getestet. Daher konnten alle Wikis für 45 Minuten am 19. und für 20 Minuten am 21. April nur gelesen, aber nicht bearbeitet werden. [96]
  • Als das Backup-Center getestet wurde, waren neue Bearbeitungen in den letzten Änderungen für 20 Minuten nicht sichtbar. Diese sind jetzt verfügbar. Du kannst hier mehr darüber lesen, wie du diese Edits finden kannst.

  • Benutzer sin eingeladen Cross-Wiki Benachrichtigungen auf allen Wikis zu testen. Dies ist die letzte Möglichkeit vor dem offiziellen Release, wodurch diese Benachrichtigungen als standartmäßig werden, was für den 12. Mai gegen 23:00 UTC geplant ist. [107] [108]
  • Du kannst nun Tastenkombinationen benutzen, um den VisualEditor zu öffnen ("meta"+V) oder du kannst auch den WikitextEditor öffnen ("meta"+E) (auf vielen wikis, auch wenn du bereits einen bevorzugten Editor ausgewählt hast). [109]

  • A new way to handle rollback was introduced. It broke some tools and scripts and was reverted. This will be re-planned after review. [126] [127]
  • CentralNotice didn't work in some older browsers. This has now been fixed. [128]

  • When you edit a file or category page with the visual editor the rest of the page will be shown in its normal place. [129]
  • The Translate extension will get an edit summary field. [130]

  • The ORES service has now moved to a new location. This should make it easier to use ORES. The ORES review service is now available as a beta feature on Wikidata and Persian Wikipedia. ORES is an artificial intelligence system for Wikimedia wikis to help editors. [149]
  • The order of wikis in collapsed cross-wiki notifications was different than when the list was expanded. This is now fixed. [150]

  • An e-mail from the Editing Department explains the technical work that is planned and being researched for the future. Items include better wikitext and visual editing, prompts for edits, language improvements, annotations, and meta-data separation. [156]
  • The sorting of Notifications into the two fly-out menus is going to change on July 5 to 7. Bundled notifications should be easier to explore and mark as read individually. [157] [158] [159]
  • From 29 June git.wikimedia.org (running Gitblit) will redirect all requests to Phabricator. The vast majority of requests should be correctly redirected. [160]

  • Ein neuer Scaler für Bilder hat eine Reihe an Fehlern behoben, die auftauchten, wenn man sich SVG-Dateien anschaute, allerdings verursachte dieser auch ein paar neue Probleme. [164] [165] [166]
  • Benachrichtigungen sind nun groupiert. Sie werden nun nach der Anzahl an Benachrichtigungen gewählt und nicht nach der Anzahl der ungelesenen Gruppen. Diese Änderung kann dazu führen, das mehr neue Benachrichtigungen angezeigt werden. Die bisherige Methode führte allerdings öfter dazu, das die Zählung der Benachrichtigungen falsch war. Ungelesene Benachrichtigungen werden zudem zuerst angezeigt werden. [167] [168] [169]
  • Spezial:Benachrichtigungen hat nun eine maximale Breite für die Liste der Benachrichtigungen auf Desktop-PCs. Dadurch werden lange Titel und Beschreibungen korrekt mit Zeilenumbrüchen versehen, zudem werden Benachrichtigungen nun auch besser geparsed. [170] [171] [172]

Probleme

  • Am 5 Juli hatte Wikimedia Commons Probleme und konnte für 20 Minuten nicht bearbeitet werden. Für eine kurze Zeit danach liefen die Letzten Änderungen und einige Gadgets nicht korrekt. Administrative Aktionen auf anderen Projekten waren auch betroffen. [173]
  • Benutzer die mehrere ungelesen Benachrichtigungen haben, können diese als gelesen markieren, in dem sie Spezial:Benachrichtigungen auf ihrem Wiki besuchen.

  • Last week Tech News announced you will get a notification when you mention yourself the same way as if someone else had mentioned you. This caused some problems and will happen later instead. [201]
  • Creating and editing links to sections on other pages on the wiki now works again in the visual editor. [202]
  • For some users, cross-wiki notifications haven't been working properly. The count has been wrong when only cross-wiki notifications were present. The cross-wiki bundle has been showing only the names of wikis and not the actual notifications. This will be fixed soon. [203] [204]

  • The login session when you choose "Keep me logged in" will now last a year. Previously it was 30 days. This will happen on August 16. [205]
  • Some abuse filters will have to be updated during the week. This is because a bug will be fixed. [206]
  • In compact language links, two new kinds of languages will be shown in the shorter language list: Languages that are used in the article's text, and languages where the article has a badge like "featured article" or "good article". [207] [208]
  • The visual editor will be available by default for logged-out editors on Wikipedias that use the Arabic script. It is already default for logged-in editors. [209]

  • Wenn jemand versucht sich mit einem gesperrten Benutzerkonto anzumelden, wird er von einem Cookie blockiert. Das heißt, dass der Webbrowser blockiert sein wird, auch wenn die IP-Adresse gewechselt wird. Das macht es für wiederkehrende Vandalen schwieriger. [285]
  • Falls Du das Inhaltsübersetzungstool verwendest, um Vorlagen in eine neue Sprache zu übersetzen, funktioniert das nun anders. Du kannst große Vorlagen wie Infoboxen übertragen. Übersetzer werden die Vorlagenparameter steuern können. Eine erste Version wird diese Woche veröffentlicht. Es besteht die Möglichkeit, dass es nicht mit allen Vorlagen korrekt arbeitet.   • Die neue MediaWiki-Version wird ab dem 29. November auf Testwikis und mediawiki.org, ab dem 30. November auf wikipediafremden Wikis und einigen Wikipedias und ab dem 1. Dezember auf allen Wikipedias verfügbar sein (Kalender).
  • Helferlein (Gadgets) erhalten eine neue Option hidden – versteckt. Das bedeutet, Du kannst Module anmelden, die nicht über die Einstellungen ein- oder abgeschaltet werden können. Versteckte Module war bisher bereits durch die Angabe [rights=hidden-gadget] möglich. Du solltest stattdessen jetzt [hidden] verwenden.   • ORES (englisch) kann nun in verschiedenen Farben darstellen, wie potentiell schädlich eine Änderung für das betreffende Wiki ist. Das läuft nur bei Sprachen, die trainiertes ORES (englisch) einsetzen, um schädigende Änderungen zu erkennen. [291]

  • Du kannst jetzt sehen, wie viele Kategorien und Seiten es unter Spezial:Tracking-Kategorien gibt. Dies hilft dir Seiten zu finden, die Aufmerksamkeit benötigen könnten. [294]

  • Administratoren und Übersetzungsadministratoren können auf Wikis mit Translate-Erweiterung das Spezial:Seitensprache verwenden. Das heißt, man kann die Sprache in der die Seite ist, festlegen. Die Translate-Erweiterung verwendet diese Sprache als Ausgangssprache für Übersetzungen. Zuvor war dies immer die Wiki-Standardsprache, meistens Englisch. [297]
  • Wikis mit Wikidata-Anbindung können mit der Parser-Funktion {{#statements: }} formatierte Daten abrufen; mit {{#property: }} erhält man Rohdaten. Den Unterschied zwischen den beiden Anweisungen kann man hier sehen. In Lua gibt es ebenfalls ähnliche neue Funktionen. [298]

Probleme

  • Einige Missbrauchsfilter für hochgeladene Dateien haben nicht so funktioniert, wie sie sollten. Wir wissen nicht genau, welche Filter noch nicht funktionieren. Das bedeutet, dass einige Dateien, die durch Filter blockiert werden sollten, in die Wikis aufgenommen wurden. MediaWiki.org und die Testwikis sind seit dem 13. Oktober, Commons und Meta seit 17. Oktober und alle anderen Wikis seit 17. November betroffen. [299]

  • video2commons was down for two weeks. This was because of a problem with Commons video transcoders. It is now back up. [306]

Changes this week

  • There is a new magic word called {{PAGELANGUAGE}}. It returns the language of the page you are at. This can be used on wikis with more than one language to make it easier for translators. [307]
  • When an admin blocks a user or deletes or protects a page they give a reason why. They can now get suggestions when they write. The suggestions will be based on the messages in the dropdown menu. [308]
  • You will be able to use <chem> to write chemical formulas. Before you could use <ce>. <ce> should be replaced by <chem>. [309]
  • You now can add exceptions for categories which shouldn't be shown on Special:UncategorizedCategories. The list is at MediaWiki:Uncategorized-categories-exceptionlist. [310]
  • The "Columns" and "Rows" settings will be removed from the Editing tab in Preferences. If you wish to keep what the "Rows" setting did you can add this code to your personal CSS: #wpTextbox1 { height: 50em; } You can change the number 50 to make it look like you want to. [311]
  • Sometimes edits in MediaWiki by mistake are shown coming from private IP addresses such as 127.0.0.1. Edits and other contributions logged to these IP addresses will be blocked and shown the reason from MediaWiki:Softblockrangesreason. This should not affect most users. Bots and other tools running on Wikimedia Labs, including Tool Labs will receive a "blocked" error if they try to edit without being logged in. [312]
  • When you edit with the visual editor categories will be on the top of the page options menu. [313]
  • The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 17 January. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 18 January. It will be on all wikis from 19 January (calendar).

  • ElectronPdfService will be enabled by default on Meta and German Wikipedia. This is a new way to get articles as PDF files you can download. It will come to more wikis later. [316]
  • The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from January 31. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from February 1. It will be on all wikis from February 2 (calendar).

Future changes

  • The Community Tech team will develop more tools to handle harassment of Wikimedia editors. The goal is to give the communities better tools to find, report and evaluate harassment. They will also work on more effective blocking tools. [317] [318]

  • Wikimedia pages will now be better at showing pictures when you share them on social media. The descriptions will be different too. You can see an example of before and after. [320]
  • There are some changes to the OOjs UI. Some old functions will not work anymore or not work as they used to. This could be a breaking change. [321]
  • The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 7 February. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 8 February. It will be on all wikis from 9 February (calendar).

  • EventStreams is a new way to show activity on Wikimedia wikis. For now it works with the recent changes feed. It will do more things later. It will replace RCStream. Tools that use RCStream should move to EventStreams before 7 July. [324]

Probleme

  • The Firefox add-on Firefogg can cause problems with the Upload Wizard. This will not be fixed, because Firefox will not support Firefogg in the future. The Upload Wizard will no longer work with Firefogg. [325]
  • Tool Labs and Wikimedia Labs databases will be under maintenance on 15 February. This will start at 17:00 (UTC) and last for about six hours. Some tools could have problems during or after this. [326]

  • Some watchlist gadgets didn't work for a period of time last week. This has now been fixed. [340]

  • You will be able to show references from <references /> tags in more than one column on your wiki. This is the list of footnotes for the sources in the article. How many columns you see will depend on how big your screen is. On some wikis, some templates already do this. Templates that use <references /> tags will need to be updated, and then later the change can happen for all reference lists. [344] [345]

Recent changes

  • The Save page button now says Publish page or Publish changes on the Wikimedia wikis except for Wikipedias and Wikinewses. This change will come to Wikipedias later. The point is to make it more clear that the edit will change the page immediately. Publish page is when you save a new page and Publish changes when you edit an existing page. [349]
  • DMOZ no longer works. Templates that use DMOZ can be redirected to archive.org or another mirror. DMOZ has been removed from the RelatedSites extension on Wikivoyage. [350]
  • You can see monthly page views when you click on Page information in the sidebar. Developers can also get monthly page views through the API. [351]
  • The Linter extension is now on smaller Wikimedia wikis. It helps editors find some wikitext errors so they can be fixed. It will come to other Wikimedia wikis later. The extension will be able to find more errors later. [352]
  • The MediaWiki-Vagrant portable development environment has been updated to use Debian Jessie. This means local development and testing will be more like on the majority of Wikimedia production servers. [353]

Problems

  • On 15 March some interwiki links to other languages were not correctly sorted. This has been fixed. If you still see pages where the interwiki links are not sorted as they should be, they should be fixed automatically with time or you can edit the page and save it without changing anything. If this doesn't work, please report it. [354]

Changes this week

  • When you edit with the visual editor, you will be able to switch the direction you write in from right-to-left to left-to-right as you are editing. This is especially important for editors who edit in languages that write from right to left. You can do this with a tool in the editing menu.   • The Seite speichern button now says Seite veröffentlichen or Änderungen veröffentlichen on most Wikipedias. The point is to make it more clear that the edit will change the page immediately. Seite veröffentlichen is when you save a new page and Änderungen veröffentlichen when you edit an existing page. [359]
  • The tracking category Kategorie:Wikipedia:Seite mit Vorlagenschleife is now added when a template loop is found. A template loop is for example when a template tries to use a second template that uses the first template. [360]
  • English Wikipedia now has cookie blocks. It will come to more wikis in the future. This is an extension to the autoblock system so when a user is blocked, the next time they visit the wiki a cookie will be set. This means that even if the user switches accounts and to a new IP address the cookie will block them again. [361]

The schedule has been changed to fix the user intent prediction filters for some wikis.   • Some users have a problem with the watchlist. Some changes in categories make the watchlist a blank page. The developers are working on this. Until this is fixed you can try some things that have helped other editors if you have this problem. You can turn on Kategorisierungen von Seiten in der Beobachtungsliste ausblenden (mehr) in your watchlist preferences. You can turn off Alle Änderungen in der Beobachtungsliste anzeigen, nicht nur die letzten in your watchlist preferences. You can remove problematic categories from Special:EditWatchlist/raw. [384]

If you have technical problems that started a couple of weeks ago you can try adding mw.loader.using('mediawiki.util').done(function(){ as the first line in the file and }); as a last one.   • Wikimedia wikis use OCG to create PDFs. The OCG code has a lot of problems and will stop working. It has to be replaced. An alternative is Electron.   • There was a problem with maps on Wikimedia wikis that used <mapframe> when you clicked on the link to another map service. Open Street Map or Google Maps are examples of other map services. If you had marked a place on the map the marker would not be in the same place on the other map service. It was in the middle of the map. This has now been fixed. [428]

  • Very old and inactive unpublished translations in the Content Translation database will be removed. This is because of technical maintenance. If you have not worked on a translation after 1 January 2016 you will lose it after 6 July. If you want to keep the unfinished translation you need to open it before 6 July with the Content Translation tool. You can continue working on it later. Translations that were started or have been worked on after 1 January 2016 will not be affected.
  • There is no new Mediawiki version this week.
  • EventStreams is a new way to show activity on Wikimedia wikis. It works with the recent changes feed. It will do more things later. It will replace RCStream. Tools that use RCStream should move to EventStreams before 7 July. Tech News wrote about this in the 2017/07 issue. [429]

  • Some pages show the error Lua error in mw.wikibase.entity.lua at line 34: The entity data must be a table obtained via mw.wikibase.getEntityObject. This problem happens on pages with a Lua module that uses Wikidata. The developers are working on fixing the problem. You can fix a page by opening it for editing and then saving without changing anything. [441]
  • Wikidata and German Wikipedia could not be edited for an hour on 28 July. You can read why and how we could avoid it in the future in the incident report.

  • You can get an email when a page on your watchlist was edited. You can choose not to get emails for minor edits. There is a bug that means that you then don't get an email when someone does a normal edit after a minor edit. The developers are working on fixing this. Until it has been fixed you can activate "Auch bei kleinen Änderungen an Seiten und Dateien E-Mails senden" at the bottom of "Benutzerdaten" in your preferences if you want to. [446]
  • The thanks button sometimes didn't work for mobile users. This was because of a new bug and has now been fixed. [447]

Around 0.1% of the traffic to the Wikimedia wikis comes from Internet Explorer 8 on Windows XP. [448]
  • Links to sections on Wikipedia don't work well in languages that don't use the Latin script. The URL in the address bar in your browser shows Latin characters like .D0.A1.D1.81.D1.8B.D0.BB.D0.BA.D0.B8 instead of the section heading in the wiki's language. Links to sections in non-Latin scripts will be in the script of that wiki in the future. This will happen in the next few months. [449] [450]
  • Wiki pages printed by the web browser "Print" function will have an updated style. This new style will be similar to the when you download a page as PDF. It will be better at showing tables, infoboxes and headings. [451] [452]

  • The RelatedArticles extension has shown related pages on Wikivoyages. You will now see the related pages at the end of the article together with an image. Previously the links were in the sidebar. Wikis that want this extension can request it on Phabricator.

  • Videos will now be played in the WebM format in all browsers. Previously some browsers used Ogg Theora (.ogv). If you use Safari, Internet Explorer or Edge you may see slower playback speed at high resolutions. Instead we will get better quality and smaller file size. You can still upload video as Ogg files. They are automatically converted to WebM. This doesn't affect Ogg audio files. [460]

  • When you edit a template with the visual editor it follows the template's format configuration on how to save it. You can now change the format in more powerful ways if your wiki wants it. [496] [497]
  • The TwoColConflict extension is a new way to solve edit conflicts. It makes it easier to copy and paste the relevant text to the text field. It has been a beta feature for the last five months. You can now try out the new interface on a page where you will actually get simulated edit conflicts. You can give feedback to the developers.

Problems

  • There is a problem with recent changes pages and your watchlist that show a large number of pages. Until it is fixed, Wikidata edits will not be shown on recent changes or in your watchlist on Commons or Russian Wikipedia. If necessary, Wikidata edits will be removed from all wikis. [498]

  • Very old versions of the Opera Web browser are no longer supported. This means that technical development will not be tested to make sure it works with those Opera versions. Use Opera 15 or above or another browser if you have problems. [525]
  • Almost 170 wikis with no high-priority errors in Linter categories will switch to use the Remex parsing library. This is to replace Tidy. A few larger wikis such as German and Italian Wikipedia will also make this switch. It will happen on 5 December.   • Because of the holidays the next issue of Tech News will be sent out on 8 January 2018.

Problems

  • When you import a page from another wiki the usernames of the users who edited the article on the wiki you imported it from are shown in the article history. This should link to the users on the original wiki. A script to fix this caused problems for Wikidata and German Wikipedia. It also created a large number of SUL accounts on wikis where editors had never edited. [534]
  • Some bot owners got email about their bots logging in from a new computer. If this is from one or a couple of wikis, you can turn these messages off in your preferences on those wikis until the problem has been solved. If not, you can report more about the problem in Phabricator.

Recent changes

  • On Wikidata, the "speichern" button when you edit is now called "veröffentlichen". This means all Wikimedia wikis have now changed from "Seite speichern" to "Änderungen veröffentlichen". This is to help new editors understand what it does. [535] [536]
  • Some edits will get an automatic tag on all wikis. This will happen when making a page a redirect, blanking a page, removing almost all content, undoing an edit, or rolling back an edit. You can see the tags for example in the recent changes feed, article history, user contributions or on your watchlist. Some wikis had already marked edits like these in other ways. [537]
  • Special:UnusedFiles shows files that have been uploaded but are not used. It will show a file that is not used on the wiki it has been uploaded to, even if the file is used on another wiki. The new Special:GloballyUnusedFiles page on Commons only shows files that are not used on any wiki. [538]
  • Structured discussions now uses the 2017 wikitext editor instead of its old custom one. This will work with your preference for wikitext or visual editor. The documentation has been updated. [539] [540]

Problems

  • Older versions of the Chrome web browser on mobile devices may see the PDF download button, but it does not work. The developers are looking into the problem. [541]
  • With the new filters in the recent changes, "Ausgewählte ausschließen" in "Namensräume" did not work for "Gespeicherte Filter" between 13 December and 2 January. When you loaded the saved filter all other namespaces were excluded instead. This has now been fixed. If you made any changes to your saved filters between 13 December and 2 January, you need to save your filters with excluded namespaces again. [542]
  • The latest version of Google Chrome broke how section links are shown in the address bar. You now see #R%C3%A9sum%C3%A9 instead of #Résumé even if MediaWiki did not encode it that way. This happened in early December. This problem has been solved. The fix will be in Chrome 64 (23 January) or Chrome 65 (6 March). [543]
  • Some POST requests to the API took longer than usual in parts of December. This affected the Wikidata UI and some gadgets the most. It has now been fixed. [544]

  • Wikidata will be moved to its own database servers. This is because it is growing and needs more resources. Because of this you will be able to read but not edit Wikidata and the German Wikipedia between 06:00 and 06:30 UTC on 9 January. You might lose edits if you try to save during this time.   • The font size in the editing window will change slightly for some users. It will now look the same on all browsers and operating systems. [546] [547]

Recent changes

  • Bureaucrats can now add and remove the accountcreator permission by default. This means the user can help create a large number of accounts, for example for an editathon. Wikis can change this if they want to. [560]
  • The Wikidata vandalism dashboard is a new tool to monitor vandalism on Wikidata labels and descriptions. It is filtered by language. [561]
  • Info pages for file pages now show the file's SHA1 hash value in the table of basic information. This is so users can see that the file is the same as the one they uploaded. [562]

Problems

  • Special:Export has a higher error rate right now. This means that the export does not always work. You should check to make sure your page exports worked. The developers are working on fixing this. [563]

  • When you review an edit made with the visual editor you can check a visual diff of your changes besides the wikitext diff. If you pick one diff type it will remember and show you that in future. The visual diff will now be the type first shown to new users. [564]
  • When you use a gallery to show images you can define the size, like gallery widths="150px". You could use em or % instead of px but it would make no difference. You can now only use 150px or nothing (150). If you write something else, instead of treating it like px, it will not work. [565]
  • The wording when you send a thanks message will change. Instead of Ja or Nein it will say Thank and Cancel. It will also be easier to understand that all thanks are public. [566]
  • Redirects connected to Wikidata can create double Wikidata items. There will now be a tracking category for this. Wikis that don't want it can disable it. [567]
