BS CSE Program Information

All BS CSE students must take the set of eight courses outlined below:

*For students who entered the program in or after AU22. Students who entered prior to AU22 or have permission to take the Legacy General Education would take Philos 1338.

In addition to the core CSE courses, which are designed to provide a breadth of knowledge, BS CSE students choose five additional courses. Students have the option to choose these courses independently or to use these courses to fulfill some of their specialization requirements. The decisions BS CSE students must make are as follows:

Technical electives

All BS CSE students must choose a specialization option, which will determine a portion of a student's technical electives. Overall, each student must have 17 credit hours of technical elective coursework, of which 9 hours must be in CSE. Some of these 9 hours will be determined by the selected specialization. The remaining 8 hours of technical electives may be additional CSE course at the 3000-level or higher not already counting toward a degree requirement or select non-CSE courses at the 2000-level or higher.

Limitations for certain CSE courses

Students are limited in the number of hours they may take of CSE courses that are graded S/U or that focus on research.

Non-CSE technical electives

If you are looking to use non-CSE course as part of your technical electives, you are allowed to do so if you met one of the following qualifications:

• The course is a part of any completed minor.
• The course is listed on the pre-approved list.
• You have successfully petitioned for an exception.

In addition to the core CSE courses, BS CSE majors are expected to take the following supplemental courses:

*Required for students who entered the program in or after AU22. Students who entered prior to AU22 may take ECE 2020, but ECE 2360 is preferred.

In addition to the core outside department courses, BS CSE students must take 8 credits of math and/or science electives from the table below.

Graduation Application

A graduation application must be completed no later than the second Friday of the term before you wish to graduate. For example, students graduating in Spring Semester will be required to submit their applications by the second Friday of the immediately preceding Autumn Semester.

Please note that a change in your graduating semester requires completion of a new application.

POCAT (Program Outcomes Achievement Test)

The Department of Computer Science and Engineering uses a comprehensive set of processes and tools to assess its programs to evaluate various aspects of the programs for the purposes of identifying and implementing improvements. To assist with this, during the graduation term, BS CSE, BS CIS, and BA CIS majors are required to complete the exit test, POCAT. Students will receive emails during their final semester about accessing and submitting the POCAT.

Special Action Probation is a departmental policy allowed by the university that assists with the review of grades at the department level. All CSE majors are subject to this policy for each term of enrollment.

Students may be placed on Warning or Special Action Probation depending on their academic situation: Warning or Special Action Probation for Grades, Warning or Special Action Probation due to Lack of Progress (LOP), or Special Action Probation after Reinstatement.

Placement on Warning

Students placed on Warning will receive a notice, but no action will be placed on the transcript.

Warning for Grades:

A Warning will be issued for the first term in which either of the following conditions apply:

• failure of one or more major or required non-major courses,
• a mark of Incomplete (I) with a lapse grade of E for one or more major or required non-major courses.

Warning for LOP

A Warning will also be issued if a pattern of W or I marks is apparent:

• two consecutive semesters of enrollment of W or I marks in one or more major or required non-major courses.

Removal of Warning

Students will be required to consult with their assigned academic advisor to discuss options that will lead to academic success, take at least one major or required non-major course, and must not earn marks of E, W, or I in any major or required non-major courses in the following term of enrollment.

Placement on Special Action Probation

Students may be placed on Special Action Probation if they do not satisfy the conditions for removal of a warning or if they meet other conditions that lead directly to Special Action Probation.

• SAP due to Grades:
  • If a student on warning subsequently fails one or more major or required non-major courses, which may or may not be the same course that was failed previously, the student will be placed on formal Special Action Probation, which will be noted on the transcript.
  • For students on warning due to Incompletes ("I") with an alternate grade of "E": If an "I" converts to "E" and the student subsequently earns one or more failing grades in major or required non-major courses, the student will be placed on formal Special Action Probation.
• SAP due to LOP: SAP due to LOP applies to students who are not making adequate or appropriate progress toward graduation in one or more of the following manners:
  • Three or more consecutive semesters of enrollment of "W" or "I" marks in any degree-applicable courses that prevent the student from making academic progress toward graduation will result in being placed on formal Special Action Probation.
  • Three or more unsuccessful attempts in the same major or required non-major course will result in being placed on formal Special Action Probation.
  • No degree-applicable courses for two consecutive terms of enrollment will result in being placed on formal Special Action Probation.

• SAP after Reinstatement: Students reinstated to the CSE major are automatically reinstated on Special Action Probation.

Removal from Special Action Probation:

• SAP due to Grades and SAP after Reinstatement:
  • Students must consult with their assigned academic advisor to determine coursework that will lead to academic success.
  • Students must take at least one major or required non-major course in the following term of enrollment and earn a passing grade.
• SAP due to LOP:
  • Students must earn passing grades in degree-applicable courses in the next term of enrollment.
  • Students must consult with their assigned academic advisor to discuss the circumstances that led to their situation and to determine appropriate next steps.

Conditions for Department Dismissal and College Dismissal

Students who do not meet the conditions to be removed from Special Action Probation are eligible to be dismissed from the department. Students whose CGPA is below 2.00 may also be eligible for dismissal from the College of Engineering.

Conditions for Reinstatement

Students who have been dismissed from the department or college and have been away for at least two semesters may seek reinstatement to the CSE major by filing a Petition for Reinstatement. Consideration of reinstatement earlier than two semesters after dismissal may be done on a case-by-case basis. Students interested in reinstatement are expected to consult with an academic advisor prior to submission of the petition.

The BS CSE program is accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission of ABET, under the General Criteria and the Program Criteria for Electrical, Computer, Communications, Telecommunication(s) and Similarly Named Engineering Programs.

The BS CSE program is also accredited the Computing Accreditation Commission of ABET, under the General Criteria and the Program Criteria for Computer Science and Similarly Named Computing Programs.

The CSE department has been designated by the NSA as a Center for Academic Excellence in Cybersecurity (CAE-C).

The BS CSE program with a Specialization in Information and Computation Assurance is recognized as an NSA Validated Cyber Defense (NSA CAE-CD) Program of Study.
