Hi, thank you for your feature request! I think this should be possible without too much work. I will add VBR encoding as an option for MP3 (with different quality options, including V0).
Hmm, it's interesting that the button did not activate only for CD2... It's a bit difficult to gauge from this information why it could have happened I'm afraid. The logic should be the same,...

Although I could not replicate the issue, I have tried to improve error handling (especially during ripping). These fixes are now on the develop branch.
