Globetrotter 3g modem not seen

Bug Description

Sony VGN-TZ21VN has a built-in Globetrotter, USB productId 6901, which shows up when warm-booting into linux from windows. You can then load the option driver and talk to the device.

The problem is, that a cold boot does not show any trace of the device.

To get it working you have to load the sony_laptop module then the device can be powered up with:

echo 1 > /sys/devices/platform/sony-laptop/wwanpower

the sony laptop module needs to be patched to force the modem on upon module insertion.

Tim, I've tried the linux-image-2.6.28-11-generic_2.6.28-11.42_amd64.deb kernel, and it works fine for me. The modem shows up after a cold boot now.

Yes, it appears to be hardware-specific. I have two computers - one Network (Swedish made) and one Packard Bell, both desktop machines. The Packard Bell machine recognises the modem even if plugged-in before boot, the Network one doesn't.
I used to run Mandriva (2009.1) on both machines. The Mandriva distro had no problems discovering the modem every boot. When I switched to Ubuntu 9.04 (Jaunty) in both computers, the problems started on the Network machine.
However, I have been running the Live Ubuntu 9.04 CD a couple of times on the Network machine, and the CD code recognises the modem every time. The wizard pops up and tells me I have a Huawei USB modem connected, and would I please enter my country and provider (quite impressive, actually!). The modem is a Huawei E220.
I have also noted that WVDial "sees" the modem even if connected at bootup, but other circumstances prevent me from using the dialer. The corresponding Gnome thingy (I have forgotten its name) does not.
What I need to do is to disconnect the modem physically and then re-connect it during or after boot, every time. Rather annoying, actually.

This bug was fixed in the package linux - 2.6.28-13.44

The patch referenced here is also already in the Karmic kernel. Setting the actively developed linux (Ubuntu) task to Fix Released as well.

The Problem still exists with the Kernel 2.6.31-12-generic in a Sony Vaio P with a Globetrotter GT M378 Modem
Only with a warm reboot from windows, the device is shown up and i can connect with the network-manager.

Still exist at Karmic Beta on Sony Vaio VGN-P21Z with GTM378

It has been working on Karmic on my Vaio vgnn-p19, but since I performed a BIOS upgrade, the modem is not powered on aymore (unless I first boot Windows)

Seems like the newer BIOS broke something

Hi! Mine's a TT11LN; the modem is named "Bus 001 Device 004: ID 0af0:7601" by lsusb and YES, it works flawesly under Karmic beta with linux-image-2.6.31-14-generic version 2.6.31-14.48.

As I never use windows (I shrink windows to 15GB just in case I need it), I can say the modem works fine with no need to boot first to windows. Tested with an spanish Simyo SIM.

Note that there's a new bios out there, but I haven't upgraded it -it's working fine, what should I?-... my actual bios version is R0202M4.

On the Vaio P it's [0af0:7601] still only visible after a "warm" boot.

It would be wonderful, if i can wipe my windows partition.
