A great alternative, I would actually go so far to say it is taking Wikipedia's place. Britannica is very well written. Wanting to do most of my research online and avoid Wikipedia, I signed up for a year of Brittanica Online. I was able to use it a little, but it wasn't extensive enough to really serve as a main reference tool for me. Wikipedia is far more in depth (although possibly at the cost of accuracy). Brittanica Online feels like something I would definately use if I was in junior high, though.
For a general, non-Wikipedia resource, the free encyclopedia.com is just as good if not better.
