Jabber was started by Jeremie Miller in early 1998, when he started developing the jabberd server. The first public recognition of the project appeared at Slashdot on 1999年01月04日. The jabberd server reached version 1.0 in May 2000, version 1.2 in October 2000, and version 1.4 in February 2002. The protocols themselves reached steady-state with jabberd 1.0, althought several key protocol enhancements were added with versions 1.2 and 1.4. In August 2001, the Jabber Software Foundation was organized to manage and extend the protocols.
