Clarke was invited to be a part of a panel discussion via the Internet as a part of Cyberfest '97, held on the date/location where HAL 9000 was fictionally born (the University of Illinois at Urbana). At the conference, which included a competition to write HAL's first words, Clarke offered his preference for HAL's first spoken sentence:
"Good morning doctors. I have taken the liberty of removing Windows 95 from my hard drive."
