Although not as much of a leap as users has hoped for, the System 7 release of Apple's Macintosh operating system in May 1991 introduced a few new features. Cooperative multitasking had been available through the optional MultiFinder of System 6, but it was made a standard feature of System 7. Virtual memory was also introduced, as was the innovative balloon help system.
