Well I've been talking about it and now hear it is. A PReview of KDE 3.2. Where do I start? Um, lets see... oh, yes. This thing is friggin awesome!
What's New?
A better question would be what isn't new.
1. Quanta:
Quanta has a host of new features.
* It has better (I dare say complete) support for css 2.
* VPL has arrived! The new Visual Page Layout gives you semi WYSIWYG editing capabilities. Basically you can do Dreamweaver style editing sans the fancy Flash capabilities.
* It also has the capability to check your html with HTML TIDY (provided that it's installed).
* There are now backups which are restored once you start up a new instance a Quanta (i.e. once you restart the app after a crash). This probably won't be used much once Quanta gets out of beta testing mode but is sure is nice to know it's there ;-)
But wait! There's more! 2. Konversation:
KDE-extragear has this IRC app called konversation. Ever used XChat? This is just like it with fewer features. Give it time and it'll definitely overthrow XChat as KDE users' IRC client of choice. Move over KSirc!
Like XChat it can be put in KDE systray but so far it doesn't alert your from the systray icon. HOWEVER, it does have an on screen display (OSD) notification which is actually better in some cases (if your actually at the screen when someone types your name). 3. Burners:
Both CDBakeoven and K3B have new options and at least in K3B's case, a new look (crystal theme by Everaldo).
K3B is also able to rip audio tracks but I don't think that this is new. It is however pretty neat. You can rip waves, ogg, mp3 and more. 4. Crystal:
And speaking of the artist supreme, 3.2 also comes with a new Crystal Icon set dubbed crystal svg.
This is however (unfortunately), in spite of the fact that the icon set is STILL in PNG format. Anyone confused yet? I sure am. 5. Kontact:
And finally, I've saved the best (i think), for last.
I've dubbed this app the Evolution killer and you know what? It is. Enter your all in one PIM straight from those loveable geniuses @ KDE central. God Bless You. God Bless You every one *tear*.
What's Improved?
1. Splash Manager:
It looks to me like they took KSplashML and made it the default splash manager. That means that some pretty cool (and large) splash screens will now be possible. Neat. 2. KDE Control Center (KControl):
Once again has gotten an overhaul. It has been rearranged, I guess, to improve usability (which I hate cause I already knew where everything was for the first setup). Anyhoo, a lot of options are now hidden away in Advanced Options... buttons. I just hope they keep everything in kcontrol instead of trying to hide it in some ugly regedit looking app (gconf-editor anyone?). 3. KDesktop:
KDesktop can now enable shadows on text residing on your desktop. So now you don't have to change your font color each time you change your wallpaper, or if you like me just ignore it cause you too lazy to keep on changing every hour.
Those're the only improvements I can think of right now, but rest assured! There are more, much more. And you guys probably thought I forgot the screenies too didn't ya? Naaaaaah. They're on they screenshots page. Get thee to drooling kiddies. You're in for another Matrix Revolutions, Kill Bill style wait... unless, you do the cvs :-)
Remember to report bugs you find when you use cvs otherwise they may not be fixed. Remember they're only bugs if they bug you so while kopete crashing might be a bug for you it sure ain't for me, since I don't use it. Don't expect me to file that bug report }:) Lata.
Woah. New FEATURE. I was just editing this thing in VPL mode and Quanta crashed and burned. I was pissed as hell and started this bad boy up again and guess what, It has automatic backups.
