ExFAT est un choix pertinent depuis août 2019, où Microsoft ont publié ses spécification et transféré leurs brevets à l'Open Invention Network.
Avant cela, c'était un système de fichiers à spécification non ouverte et encombré de brevets, bref rien de recommandable.
