It has had its share of problems early on as the early design was kind of overeager. The dev community also suffered nasty takeover/schism/drama (gsoc fund embezzlement, domain held hostage, the usual) a while ago.

So, there's that. Trying to change/improve tox.chat and people behind it is a waste of time, I know from experience.
It's quite sad how tox.chat refuses to point to qTox osx binaries, or correct instructions for Linux repos, even going as far as lying that there's no support for $distros. Some of the reasons why own qTox website was needed.

People will tell you different on reddit and 4chan, but if you look at official statistics of tox, decreasing number of contributors to toxcore, μtox and qtox, stagnation of antox https://toxstats.com/ number of design problems that are impossible to solve with such (good and secure!) architecture... you will see that tox won't matter soon.
