Does Jabber, Inc. control the Jabber community?
No. The open-source Jabber server project was started by Jeremie Miller in 1998 and first came to public attention in January 1999. Jabber, Inc. was formed in March 2000 to pursue commerical opportunities related to Jabber and has developed its own proprietary implementations of the Jabber protocol. Although Jabber, Inc. is not an open-source company, it has supported the Jabber community in many ways, for example by creating the Jabber Software Foundation to manage the Jabber protocol. Many different companies and open-source projects create Jabber-compatible software, and the Jabber Software Foundation is an independent membership organization that is not beholden to any one commercial interest.
