syn: misrepresent, distort, falsify share the sense of presenting information in a way that does not accord with the truth. misrepresent suggests a usu. deliberately incorrect or misleading representation or account: The dealer misrepresented the condition of the car. distort implies a twisting or perverting of intended meaning, as through error, bias, or exaggeration: The witness distorted the facts. falsify suggests an untruthful account, with an intention to mislead; it may involve fraudulent tampering with facts: to falsify a death certificate.
