From the 49 MB operation manual I downloaded from
http://www.yaesu.com/indexVS.cfm?cmd=DisplayProducts&ProdCatID=106&encProdID=3F8B6B6AF1EC22B82F01E68C1E0F0BA6&DivisionID=65&isArchived=0
it appears that the serial port is only for packet radio 1200 or 9600
baud, not for computer control of the transceiver frequency and mode. I
didn't read the APRS version but it might also allow some computer
communication but it appears that the APRS reading and sending is
internal to the radio.
I do know that the FT857D and FT897D do have a CAT port, but not digital
FM. The FT-991 has digital FM supposed to be an upgrade from the FT897D
and as such I suspect it has CAT but I haven't looked at it. I don't see
a benefit to digital VHF voice so I'm sticking with my FT857D.
