Challenges and opportunities

Achieving the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development in Asia and the Pacific will take an extraordinary collective effort, with the region off track on all 17 Goals and based on current progress it will take 32 more years to meet the goals.

High quality data is essential for effective monitoring of the SDGs at the global, regional, national and sub-national levels. However, according to the Asia-Pacific SDG Progress Report 2026, across Asia-Pacific, on average, only 55 per cent of the indicators have two or more data points, and a third have no data at all. Despite an increase in data availability each year, the pace of improvement has slowed and gender equality (Goal 5) and peace, justice and strong institutions (Goal 16) continue to have the least data.

Our response

ESCAP publishes the annual Asia-Pacific SDG Progress Report and provides tailored support to countries to strengthen the monitoring progress towards the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development as well as national development targets.

The SDG progress report 2026 provides a comprehensive assessment of the region’s progress toward the 17 Sustainable Development Goals and their 169 targets, as well as the challenges and crises slowing advancement. Drawing on the latest data and insights, the report highlights achievements, identifies persistent gaps, and offers actionable recommendations to accelerate progress.

This year’s Companion Analysis Paper places special emphasis on performance across six key transitions—food systems, energy, digital connectivity, education, welfare and social protection, and the environment—reflecting the multifaceted sustainability challenges facing the Asia-Pacific region.
