A Fulfilling Two Weeks Immersed in American History and Culture

I had the incredible opportunity of spending two weeks in Ohio, USA. Before the trip, I attended a networking event and a send-off ceremony, where I connected with students from Wright State University. Since our university has an annual exchange program with Wright State, their students first visit Japan for two weeks before we travel to Ohio. Through these pre-departure activities, I had the chance to interact with Wright State students, and we exchanged contact information.

Even now, we continue to stay in touch online, keeping the cultural exchange alive.

As someone aspiring to become a junior high school teacher, the program offered invaluable experiences. I had the chance to explore American history and culture through activities such as attending a Major League Baseball game, visiting an Air Force base in Ohio, and viewing exhibits of the Wright Brothers’ airplanes.

Beyond the scheduled program, I was thrilled to purchase a world map and math workbooks — both of which I had been wanting for a while — during my stay in the United State. I also spent quality time with the children at my host family’s home, enjoying activities like Double Dutch jump roping and origami.

These two weeks were truly fulfilling. I hope to apply the lessons I learned and the experiences I gained from this trip to enrich my daily life moving forward.

Inspired to Study Abroad After Winning the Kake International Japanese Speech Contest

In Sri Lanka, students begin learning their national language, English, and a second foreign language from their first year of junior high school. This is how I first encountered Japanese. Winning the Kake International Japanese Speech Contest in 2017 was a life-changing moment that inspired me to study abroad at Okayama University of Science.

At the university, I have the opportunity to interact with students from many different countries, making each day exciting and fulfilling. I am learning Japanese language and literature. Outside of my academic life, I volunteer by teaching English and math to local elementary and junior high school students, and I work part-time, which has helped me develop a strong sense of responsibility and independence.

In the future, I aspire to follow in my parents’ footsteps and pursue a career in education.
