Message from the Resident Representative

It is my great honor to assume the role of Resident Representative of the JICA Fiji Office.

Since my arrival, I have had the privilege of meeting with a wide range of stakeholders, including government officials, municipal leaders, development partners, NGOs, and members of local communities. I have been warmly welcomed and have had opportunities to learn about the diverse initiatives underway across the region and the dedication of the people involved. These encounters have deepened my appreciation for the warmth of the people and the richness of the region’s cultures and values, reaffirming its profound appeal.

In Japan, Fiji is often associated with rugby or tropical islands, but the reality is far more diverse, vibrant, and deeply enriching. As I continue my work here, I hope to share more of this rich appeal with people in Japan.

The JICA Fiji Office is responsible not only for Fiji, but also for cooperation with Kiribati, the Cook Islands, Tuvalu, Nauru, and Niue. We also work closely with the JICA Offices in Samoa, Tonga, and Vanuatu as we address the wide-ranging challenges faced across the Pacific.
While many Pacific island nations share common vulnerabilities, I am continually inspired by the resilience of their people, the richness of their cultures, and their forward-looking spirit.

JICA has contributed to the development of the Pacific region through a wide range of cooperation, covering climate change, disaster risk reduction, solid waste management, water and sanitation, education, health, and human resource development.

Long- and short-term training programs in Japan, along with the activities of JICA Volunteers, continue to serve as important bridges of friendship between Japan and the Pacific.

Japan and the Pacific island countries have long nurtured a strong partnership built on trust, mutual understanding, and friendship. This partnership will become even more important as we work together toward a sustainable and inclusive future.

JICA remains committed to listening to voices on the ground and advancing cooperation that responds to real needs in close partnership with local communities.

It is truly a privilege to work alongside the people of the Pacific and contribute to the region’s development.

Finally, I would like to express my sincere appreciation to everyone who continues to support JICA’s work. I look forward to working with all of you in the years ahead.

November 2025
Yumi Kimura
