Burundi

Since its independence in 1962, persistent conflict displaced a large portion of the rural population and destroyed economic and social infrastructure in Burundi. As a result, the country's social and economic indicators fall below the average of Sub-Saharan Africa, and there are about 400,000 refugees and 150,000 internally displaced persons. Although agriculture accounted for about90 percent of the labor force and 50 percent of GDP in 2010, dense and increasing population makes the current living standard difficult to be sustained. JICA's support to Burundi is primarily focused on 1) improving the basic living environment and 2) the consolidation of peace.
