Merger & Acquisition/Consolidations of the Rural Bank Sector and Financial Inclusion in the Philippines(2022_2_40_015)

Outline

The rural banking sector is one of the major players in promoting financial inclusion in the Philippines. In this project, we will research the following topics: (1) the policies and measures/programs implemented by Bangko Sentral ng Pilipina, the central bank of the Philippines, to accelerate mergers and acquisitions (M&As)/consolidations among rural banks and the achievements from 2000 to the present; (2) case studies of M&A/consolidation in terms of their objectives and operating performance; and (3) the present and future roles of the rural banking sector in the rural economy and the policy implications in the context of the rapidly changing business environment, including digitization.
