Culture and art blooming amid beautiful nature acts as the foundation for the bright future of Seo-gu. In the Korean Education History Center located in Gudeok Culture Park on Gudeoksan Mountain, visitors can witness the 100-year history of Korean education all at once. Along with the textbooks and teaching aids from the past to the present, Seodang (a traditional schoolhouse), an open-air school, as well as an old classroom with a coal stove installed are catching the eyes of visitors. The Korean Folk Culture Center, situated in harmony with the lovely forest and a small waterfall, is a place where visitors can see how our ancestors were living, with a model traditional thatched cottage and various farming tools on display.
Along with the Korean Education History Center and the Korean Folk Culture Center, the Folk Museum representing the culture of Seo-gu as a venue for lifelong education, is also quenching the cultural thirst of residents. Gudeok Youth Training Center, located in the sunny forest of Daesin Park is a bedrock for teenagers seeking to enjoy some leisure time and cultivate the wisdom of life through community activities. Not only for teenagers but also for all residents of Seo-gu, it offers an opportunity for mind-body training and cultural experiences.
Gudeokgol Culture Market, where people display and sell Korean traditional craftwork every Saturday;
Memorial Art Theme Park for commemorating Busan-born artists;
Lake Park where a small fountainhead was transformed into a charming pond full of aquatic plants and fish;
Seo-gu Culture Center, a friendly cultural place where Seo-gu residents can take diverse cultural programs; and
Gudeok Folk Art Museum, where exciting Gudeokmanggaesori (a local traditional song) and Busan Nongak (a form of traditional Korean music in Busan) can be heard resonating;
All of those are great places for cultural experiences in Seo-gu where precious Korean traditions and high art go hand-in-hand.
In Seo-gu, there is also a place where culture meets history.
The Provisional Capital Memorial Hall, which was used as the provisional government complex and the presidential residence during the Korean War, is one of the most distinctive modern buildings remaining in Seo-gu. It is a architecturally and historically valuable cultural asset that embodies the painful modern and contemporary history of the Korean Peninsula.
In particular, the provisional government complex recently underwent a renovation and now exhibits around 300 pieces of local cultural assets, including two pieces of national treasures and ten treasures from the Gaya era.
Above all else, culture and art bloom best in district festivals. In the summer, the Busan Sea Festival and the spirited Hyeonin Singing Festival are held with great fanfare; massive crowds decked out in bright colors flock to Songdo Beach to enjoy those festivals on a midsummer night. In October, when autumn is in full swing, Gudeokgol Culture and Art Festival and Forest Concert, where the residents of Seo-gu are all able to come together for some fun, are held in Gudeokgol Arboretum, which exudes the distinctive atmosphere of Gudeokgol forest. The Sondgo Haesang Daljip Festival, a unique straw heap burning festival held on the sea on Jeongwol Daeboreum in January, is a highlight of the tourism experiences in Seo-gu as well.
