Producing statistics

Eurostat produces European statistics to support EU policy development and monitoring by providing the data that users need.

We work closely with EU countries to define, develop, test, and agree on common methodologies to ensure data comparability across the EU. Data collection and validation is mostly carried out by national statistical authorities in accordance with EU regulations and standards. Following the secure transmission of data, Eurostat performs additional quality checks and compiles the data into aggregated European-level statistics.

Strong planning, reporting, and evaluation procedures underpin the entire system.

European statistical programme

The European statistical programme 2021-27, established by EU regulation 2021/690, provides the framework for the development, production, and dissemination of European statistics.

Eurostat implements it through annual programmes that define specific tasks and objectives for each year.

Corporate planning

To ensure transparency and accountability, Eurostat’s corporate planning documents are publicly available.

These include the Strategic plan covering objectives for 2020-2024, a yearly management plan detailing forecasted activities, outputs, and resources, and an annual activity report summarising achievements and resource use from the previous year.

Evaluations

Eurostat conducts various evaluations to assess its overall performance, including progress on work programme goals and how well it meets user needs.

It also evaluates statistics across different thematic areas to ensure quality and relevance.
