Background to Target 17
In
decision CP-9/7, the meeting of the Parties to the Cartagena Protocol (COP-MOP) had taken note of the proposed preparatory process for the post-2020 global biodiversity framework and stressed the importance of
including biosafety in the framework, inviting Parties to participate in the process for its development.
In the same decision, COP-MOP requested the Secretariat to facilitate the participation of an adequate number of biosafety experts, including those with expertise in the Nagoya – Kuala Lumpur Supplementary Protocol on Liability and Redress, in the development of the relevant elements of the post-2020 global biodiversity framework, including in relevant consultation workshops.
Finally, it also requested the
Liaison Group on the Cartagena Protocol to contribute to the development of the relevant elements of the biosafety component in the post-2020 global biodiversity framework, in consultation with the co-chairs of the Open-ended Working Group.
