More White Space and a Smaller Google Logo

In May, Google started to change the logos used by its services to make them look more consistent. Tony Ruscoe compiled a list of the new logos and it's clear that the service names are more visible.

The updated Google logo is now displayed on Google's search results pages and you'll notice that it's smaller and there's more space at the left of the page. Another change is that the SearchWiki buttons are placed next to the "cached" and "similar" links.

Google constantly runs experiments that test different font sizes, background colors, padding values to determine which one is the best. For example, last year Google tested three versions of the search results pages and the one with the least white space was the most popular.

  14. I don't like the extra white space either, I find it rather distracting. I hope they chance the layout back to how it was soon.

    1. I also do not like that white space! The previous layout was indeed much better, but it also can be improved. I take this to be an effort to do so - therefore continue the quest.

  18. You know why, well one of the reason why Google is the most successful and used search engine in the world. Good use of white space of course all the others initially were cluttered, i.e. Ask, Yahoo etc... people wanted a simple , clean and effect search engine with no distractions... Great system and so very effective....

  19. I really don't care much about Google's font sizes, colors, padding.. etc. As long it gives me relevant search results, I will continue using Google.

  20. I agree with Marco. Most of the other search engines feel too busy and cluttered. I love using Google because it is clean, not cluttered and easy on the eyes. There are very few distractions and even the advertisement don't take too much away from the natural search results.
