This looks like an awesome collaborative tool for newsletter, blogging teams. Something that will draw everything together into one messy mass of confused order... or something like that.

Brilliant idea and execution from what I can tell so far.
The critic in me is most concerned with the handling of information overload. I have the problem today where my in box list gets too large and important email spill over into a dark dungeon.

Do waves do anything to solve this problem or will they increase the number of "New" things for me to manage and move around.
Does the "inbox" update based on recent activity with in a wave? Can I pin important ones in a place?

I feel like the management of this rich communication will be key in making the medium take flight.

What might be equally important to make this medium take flight is the interaction with other services, such as twitter. If person A uses twitter to update his status on site X, he will most likely not want to also update his status on sites Y and Z. So if google could make "wave" mimick the updates person A places on site X and site X would do so visa versa, this could make wave popular in a very short time.

I think it's nothing less than a decentralized social network. The potential is huge, and really interesting - whether it succeeds or not, the era of walled garden networks like Facebook is slowly coming to an end.

I trust it beats down the complexities of Outlook. Such a bothersome program to use for the uninitiated. thanks Google, buy and sell my information as you please if it means the world gets over its ridiculous fantasies.

I am less enthused. Wave is glorified HTML/RTF email and basically the next step up from the current text-only+attachments gmail. It's nice. The main thing is how does it play with the 90% of users out there that don't have gmail or even webmail. No need to invent a new proprietary (in fact, even non-proprietary) rich document format to address a need there's already a solution for. All Google needs to do is change its plain text editor in gmail with something that better allows embedding images, videos, links, etc.

It's actually XMPP/Jabber with OpenSocial and HTML5, nothing close to being glorified email.

They didn't even invent a new format, they just made an XMPP extension for real time communication and applications.



This is far more than email, this is more for communication not just sending a message.

Think of this as an open standard alternative to Facebooks Wall feature except being real time and more accessible to developers.



And the other thing is being open standard, it doesn't require that the user is on Gmail, only that they're using a service that supports Jabber and the Wave Extension, so at some point we may see AOL, Yahoo and Hotmail with Wave support.

So, is anyone at Google working on the "Contact Picker" for GMail or not? I see stuff like this popping up left and right, but I still don't see a contact picker in my GMail. Wasn't this supposed to be offered quite some time ago?

Never-the-less I think Google Wave is a cool idea, although most likely won't be used to it's full potential by many people. Organizations may be a completely different story though.

Then again, maybe I just don't have enough friends who keep up with Google as much as I would like them to.

This is obviously not a copy of Twitter, although you could use it as a Twitter client. It's just a cross between email, instant messaging and collaboration systems like Google Docs. In some scenarios, it's more efficient to discuss with a group of people in real-time, by sharing a free-form document.

Unlike Twitter, Google's system is open (you can install it on your own server), conversations are private and more flexible.

Waves are XML documents which are kept in sync via collaborative editing "protocols", and those documents can include text conversations, maps, videos, gadgets etc.

this app will be a killer if its relatively easy to incorporate into existing web platforms applications. Id love to be able to embed a google wave into a joomla site for real time project management of construction projects. To have a quick simple way to solve issues would speed up so many facets of my industry... engineering, manufacturing, construction, permitting all handled in an efficient manner.... very cool

It changes the communication paradigm from 'document transmission' to 'real-time document editing'. This is a profound shift that is obvious to do once you truly embrace the cloud. By easily encompassing all current communication paradigms it reduces the communication friction we currently have.

This is a unique and fantastic, we are now entering, what l would like to call the space age this it seems will revolutionize the way we contact each other, and l am going to include this on my limo hire blog.

I just finished watching the video, and I was blown away. I was amazed at how content-centric this is. Any type of content can theoretically be added to a wave: chats, e-mail, documents, images, spreadsheets, code, video, twits, etc.--anything you wish. Even extensions are exposed as content within waves. This completely breaks down the barrier between different forms of content (and applications) and unifies it all as waves. This means that, theoretically, all of Google’s services can be unified within Google Wave. They wouldn’t necessary have to go away, but their interfaces would be used less, as all their content would be exposed through Google Wave’s interface. Not just that, but any service could be added and exposed as waves, from Google Reader and Gmail to competing services like Flickr and Facebook. Just like RSS feeds pull in the web to us, Wave could eventually pull in all our online activity into one organized place. And we’d rarely need to leave it!

The best part of all this is how open this is. Anyone can offer a competing services, and anyone can theoretically take all his waves with him to a competing service. One could even run a Wave server at home, solving the privacy issues of using a third-party service.

In short, this has the potential to change not just the web, but how we compute in general. I can’t wait to see where this goes.

It's a good idea, one that countless other people have no doubt had, but not been able to implement due to RENT CONCERNS. The concept does have some problems though related to properly rendering the different content for example now I get to lose my font and my color of my document, I guess maybe that is fine but who decided theirs was better, just for the common man?

Wow.. Wave has insane potential. I don't know much about programming or anything like that, but maybe I can give one simple example based on something I enjoy that might make sense to some of you.

I play Magic: the Gathering. One of the great things about the game, for those that don't know it, is it's a card game where you design your own deck to build. I tend to chat with friends about deck ideas on IRC, and of course, you generally show a list and then get feedback. Something like this would allow me to get feedback while I'm still entering the list of cards in my deck (taking Thoughtcast out of the list and putting Gush in, for example - both cards that draw me extra cards).

This is just one small tiny corner of what it's capable of doing, and the fact that you can get automatic feedback on the fly is *enormous* - probably its best selling point.

I only have one question/concern about this feature. Lars Rasmussen said on the video that it would be open source and set up in such a way that people could open competing services. The concern I have is more based on compatibility. Compare this to running Linux. As long as your operating system is up to date, you can run anything you want. But what happens if you prefer - or require, for some reason - an older kernel, or another piece of software? Then some software that you may want or need may not operate properly, or at all. I'm the kind of person that likes to see the lowest common denominator as low as possible in cases like this; every computer I build for myself, for example, has a 3.5" floppy drive, because I still have floppies with software and other files on them.

For what it's worth, I daresay if you want to be able to keep a certain style of formatting, you might only want to share the wave with certain people who understand that and are willing to take that into consideration. Also, remember that it's operating in your browser, so either it'll use your browser settings or it'll will have some style options of its own, like what you see on some forums.

Only one comment - this is as hyped and lame as the continuum transfunctioner in Dude Where's my car (that too was brought in by 2 totally Nordic guys). - Everything wave does, Facebook can do already. This is another example of how Google is squandering money earned by advertisements into endeavors that wont yield any money... PS I dont work for MSFT, Bing sucks equally and also not for Facebook ...

Really this is SOOO cool. I did have got the idea to create a startup with a similar idea, but this is worked out way better, in a way I think only Google can handle... Shriniwas: no, this really is different from facebook. Although theoretically you can integrate Wave in Facebook and Facebook in Wave. This is way better than facebook can ever be.

I've been running collaborative projects for years and current applications and services each had their limits and different look and feel, as well as different login. Not cool at all.

I like some gadgets' features, while Wave's collaboration is not a WOW for these days. The question is how to co-exist in the market with so powerful advertising machine that Google? Perhaps, to be less expensive, more comprehensive and business friendly.
What I am thankful to Google is for their support to stop a war against Rich JavaScript-based interfaces and browser-based IDE that we've been fighting for since 2003.

Nice Job for bringing web 2.1 in general public but what about web 2.1 for entreprise, have you thought about packaging this set of application in a appliance that would run inside an enterprise much like Google Search Appliance.

Many enterprises will be reluctant to use a model like Software as a service like Google Apps were it reside in the cloud but in an appliance were they could ensure that their data stays inside their so called controlled environment it would be a whole new picture.

Right now many companies like IBM with Lotus Connection, Lotus Quickr and Microsoft SharePoint target this market to get collaboration into the enterprise. Their licence model is base on a user based basis. This to me is a none sense it like Oracle charging licence per row in a database, but with an appliance approached it would be a nice thing for Google to tackle this market.

The purpose has always been to make communication much easier,efficient and real time effective online. That has been achieved with this Google Wave and others who paved the way earlier. Again unfortunately finger typing communication somehow still cool in this 21st century with this Google Wave. Well wonder when can we move away from that and start thinking out of the box from human physical computer interaction POV first before apps development for finger typing.

Hence the missing part is always the real life human to human interaction factor. Especially since computer has always been a barrier in between.Since then we learn to become invisible, hiding between words etc. I know this has always been in realms of tech comm/ philosophical debate so on. But the truth is there's nothing different about this Google Wave. Except it has tremendously improve the old method.
Thanks to the engineers and developers at Google for the little effort.
Now let see how independent developer/ digital marketeers now explore/exploit this.

I would alternatively like to see developer and engineers explore on human to human interaction level by reducing the need of computer/keyboard usage altogether while improving 'other communication' digital technologies particular visual interfacing.
I know there's many out there but slow in improvements.

But I guessed the bright minds in Google probably working on it. Like they always do.



Again Google Wave could possibly be the answer to integrate all social network/communication apps/gadget into one handy system. However eventually there will be other Google-wave type out there e.g Colayer for instance(as Nida Rafiq mentioned in the post).

With all honesty, we just need to ask ourselves why in the first place we communicate online again and again. Why online communication can't be more visible by reducing less textual approach but employing more visual communication tech... interfacing physical/aural(with option to integrate custom avatar).

Afterall, thats what makes us human, a social creature, an attention seeker,sharer, communication worker, news monger and a developer of sorts etc etc.
Hence, scale it back Google back to visual interfacing for that next level social network approach,Google.

That's to me is the Holy Grail of 21st century communication. Improve the old , extend the new, develop everything, integrate as we go.

It seems like the intelligent and fast search provides a solution to calendar in Wave.

Why not have a calendar search page that populates by searching all wave's for dates in any format. Example would be any wave that contains a currently active tuesday would then look at the date of the comment and place a calendar item in that week's tuesday. Then there needs to be a corresponding acceptance, Ok, sure, or other natural language approval from the current user to highlight it as an expcted activity. This would be a very natural way to schedule, and easy to expand upon.

Maybe you could have a caly bot that recognizes when you are putting in or responding to date information and upon approval inserts calendar friendly date, and acceptance info....

I think a combination of this is the way to go really.

I was shown a live preview of this when me and some other class mates went to Google Australia (where it is being developed). It definately has potential and I'm very excited!

i think google talk had far less features then yahoo msger, and to make up for that they have now launched google wave..it might have some new features, as all google products it might be have a awesome user oriented UI,,,,,but basically it's a make up for what google lacks in google talk.... I hope its better then Yahoo msger ..

Watching the demo left me absolutely mind boggled! This product is going to open so many ways to enhance the future not only for email but for improving the way people are able to work. So many companies are going to jump at the idea to be able to communicate with almost any one when working on projects, and being able to work together without being in the same place. Absolutely AMAZING!

Actually, a version for Android/iPhone isn't necessary! It runs right in the browser. They showed it in the demo. It would appear to work really well! Twitter is also already integrated "Twave". This is very awesome!

This would be cool to see with help desk system, knowledgebase, and comment/review system. I can see all of Amazon's various content sections being driven by Google Wave.

I love the creations of google so definitely this will be one more fantabulous creation that the world will see.

I hope technology today is not moving from locally installed programs to online web applications so that in a way we only need an embedded system and a web browser. I think there are too many communication media and to consolidate into one utility is great; however, I am unable to keep track of all my subscriptions and status updates online. I don't like the idea of being exposed to the world by using an agent to memorize all my passwords and subscriptions.

Even more, what about online disc space? I care about how my information is being saved, this is sure to cause all my gestures to be stored online. I hate the idea that there are people taking interest and loyalties to my activities online.

Nevertheless, you go google, the only good thing online, everything you need in one page.

so it is possible google wave goes live without email integration? if so it will be a major disappointment.

It's always fun to read those who boast that this has been done before and that it's nothing but a glorified version of something already out there.

What every single one of these people fail to realize is that those products didn't have the brand recognition that Google does.
I am sure 100 other ideas/products similar to this are out there but unless none knows of them they are useless.

Here brand recognition matters and Google has it.

My prediction is that this will take of in Enterprise as well.
There is to much potential in the implementation for it not to, it's just a matter of time.
At my work we have already identified about 15 use cases where it would boost our collaboration and turn around times.

It seems as an incredble thing but still can't get what it does exactly. It might be just a reply to Google's competitors in social networking market.

First impressions I think Google Wave is really impressive and it does make me think that it could be the final punch to the competitors out there within the online market... As far as I can see after some extensive research, Google Wave will support traditional email at some point although I am yet to send myself an email to my Google Wave account from Gmail, although Wave is still beta so I appreciate some things will be limited. But, when this happens, from what I can make out, correspondence from other platforms will be able to interate with Google Wave but without the 'Wave' features. In other words, much like standard email.. But with Google Wave being a framework, I see it as something competitors out there will have to adopt, whether they want to or not due to the client base liking the Wave experience. If corporations start to embrace this new framework and online media for that matter, websites/ forums etc.. then the rest is history as I see it. Just my opinion, but from what I've read it looks like it could go this way.

I personally can't wait to see this open for the public and will sign up the moment I can. I have so many things going online, that require me to go through crap loads of websites to answer all my messages. One nice central site I can just log into to do everything, in a neat ordered fashion, would be just heavenly!

Would absolutely LOVE an invite if anyone has any free ones to hand out? I have been beating my head against a brick wall wanting someone to make something like this for ages. I can think of so many uses for it.

Google Wave is a really sweet tool. Just got done checking it out and I think this will catch on really quickly once people see how useful it can be for sharing photos and documents. Even business people will find Google Wave useful so props for Google for making yet another homerun with their software. They are really on a roll over there.

I've had a Google Wave account for a month or so now and so far it's quite good, there's definitely a lack of promised functionality although Wave is still in beta. I also have a Google Wave Dev account which I am experimenting with and for the moment I see Wave as something that will get far better with time.

IMHO this is the most useless tool I have ever seen in my life. I don't see how people could use this stuff effectively. I am trying to use it since a week and I still haven't understood why I should keep using it. Could somebody please explain what they are doing of so fantastic with it?

I believe that if some of us developed something like that the biggest part of the comments had been like mine, but since Google is implementing it, it HAS to be so cooooooool.

As Wave is opensource'ed, I like to see a robot extension that integrates OpenSouce Document Management and Wave rather than Google Docs!!just my thought!

Is the "Download all" meant to download a document so that it can be shared? I can't get it activated, is it just disabled in the beta version? If I can't export and use my documents elsewhere, this is pretty useless...;)

Finally got my inviation and I must say Wave looks quite interesting. It's very difficult to judge at the moment as I have only set up one wave myself but looking forward to seeing what it can do.

The problem I had was that I couldn't get hold of an Invite.

Google wave is is Mega Fail - Look around - I already said this in May 2009 (see comment above). Its as useless as the Continuum Transfuctioner.

So much for another few million hard earned advertising dollars down the drain for google - Like nexus zero and Chrome (rust) OS.

I liked the new concept for communication and sharing ideas.

I am ready to enjoy the Wave.

Ok after seeing all these spam comments or paid "online image managers", i have to admit that Google is now officially reduced to lame using same underhand means that Microsoft used to hide its failures. Facebook usage is beating Google hands down. it will only take a few bright minds to kill google's search power, then we can relish the relic that Google will end up into.

Again look around Google had 3 flops 1) Wave 2) Buzz and 3) Nexus one
These are signs that Google is as retarded as MSFT and as haughty as AAPL.

Initial thoughts on wave is that it is a bit clunky to use. Knowing what to click for things you want to do like open a certain window can be confusing at times, but overall it could be a good tool.

The wave is a cool idea although I'm wondering if it's just a tool created to upstage the competition and in doing so has been built without being fully tested. I do hope it is a success though.

I did not know that it's google existeia wave. I started to use it yesterday after reading this article and is actually super good. I recommend it

Heard alot of talk about this and thought this was going to be used by every one but since the release have not heard many people talk about it.

I've actually been using Wave at school for a few months now. It's a great group work interface. I recommend it for it's simplicity.

The ones that really take off are the ones that don't exist else where so are filling a gap in the market as for this it looks like an amalgamation of several already existent platforms and I can see it fizzling out!

Google wave is a massive flop. I knew it would be a flop the moment I looked at the beta. It is counter intuitive and a total waste of money. It is a theft in a way for the google company because the programmers stalled on google's quickness to make a good social network system giving time for facebook to expand. Google wave is a 100% waste because I have a mail box at gmail.. why should I use another google product for some kind of mailing thing. Could anyone sane not see it will certainly be a flop????

What google needed to do since a long time was a good social network that had the ability to combine gmail as well.

well. we have been using google wave since it first comes out and it is really useful for students and teachers in our university. i hope the team in google wave can still work on wave and don't stop this great appliaction. thank you.

I think the thing is people just dont know about what google do as the only thing you see on the homepage is the search box.

I feel like the management of this rich communication will be key in making the medium take flight.

It does look like a testing ground for something they might use with Google plus.
There are a lot of applications that can be incorporated into it.

Google Wave will be closed for editing after 31st of January, which leaves its users with the problems of export and choosing a new platform.So all the GW users will be moving in different directions.
