Weird. I replaced "live." in the JavaScript with "gmail." and it let me register my Gmail address as a Windows Live ID. However, trying to login to Windows Live Mail gives the error, "Windows Live Mail does not support this account type." (Signing in to Windows Live Mail with my @live.com email address worked though.)

They should take a leaf out of Google's book and treat "your.name@live.com" and "yourname@live.com" as the same account.

In Firefox: Drag the link to your Bookmarks Toolbar. Visit the sign-up page and then press the button you just added. This should work.

The copy link location kept opening a blank new tab.

if you change live for anything in the script, you can get an account like firstname@lastname.com, but it only can be used in services that use live ID like messenger, groups and spaces.....

Alex, do you think the ID's created with this hack would last forever, 'cos MS has not officially started live.com, what will happen, if people start sending & reciving emials on live.com ID's?

I was just thinking about this!

Microsoft can't take your mail account unless you break their policies. This is just an unofficial way of getting a live.com address, you're not hacking their servers or something.

I can't get the JS to work, i get no opo-up when i click it, what am i doing wrong? What exactly does 'the location' of this link mean?

Don't click on the link. Just right-click and select:

* "Copy shortcut" (in Internet Explorer)
* "Copy link location" (in Firefox)
* "Copy link address" (in Opera)
* something similar for other browsers

Then go to the window (or tab) where you already loaded the page from live.com, paste the code in the address bar, press enter and fill the form.

I also created a live id. but was not able to create with my name. since it said that it found some errors in my name ???????

It said after I tried that they were trying to fix and error with the registration process. But Hotmail signups still work...

The trick did work, but I get this error:

Oh Well.

Yep, looks like they're fixing it now, soit wont let you do it anymore. :(

I clicked on it. I think it's a SPAM/PHISHING thing. Would everything be okay if I change my password & secret answer for that account?

When I clicked on it, the link took me to Account Settings.

I emailed Windows Live ID about the above email and they said they sent it to me. It's not a spam/phishing email. Now I can relax. LOL

Don't relax too much. Microsoft says: "If you created an @live.com account using the instructions below, it's quite likely the account will get blown away."

im using my @live.com address since yesterday with no problem, but etill prefer to use gmail =)
