It was a tar.gz. And yeah it usually only takes like 30 seconds, but this one is still stuck and it's been over a week now…

Have you tried it again ( with a .zip file extension) ? Is this possible to try?

I can't; the "delete" button is grayed out so there's no way for me to start a new backup.

After 14 days the spam filter tool was started again ( blocked queue was removed) - could be this was a feture of amazons cloud server.

I am interested in the day , when the backup queue was blocked 2 weeks also… if this is repairing itself ..?

Maybe try running

WIKIDOT.modules.ManageSiteBackupModule.listeners.deleteBackup()

Wow, thanks for that little module - it worked in Firefox Console well and deleted the waiting old backup entry !

Good to know that the queue was full/blocked and not cleared !

edit: it is a good idea not to copy the spaces at the begin or end with the command-line… ( happened for me and created syntax errors..)

I am relatively new to Wikidot. Where is 'Developer Tools Console"?

Developer tool has nothing to do with wikidot, but with the "browser"I

I did the following:

• copied from the mail above the wikidot command without leading/trailing spaces !)
• went to my admin screen - security - backup ( with the waiting backup) ,
• in Firefox on this screen I pressed F12 ( starting Web developer tool) - Console
• inserted the copied text in the filter of the console
• inserted the copied text in the new line >> down under this filter - and clicked enter
• There was a warning from Firefox that I want to insert something in the code of the site … I had to enter (in german) "Einfügen erlauben" ( in english something like "allow insertion"

and - voila - the waiting backup was removed and all free to start a new backup.

Followed your excellent instructions (using Chrome) and now have an up to date backup for http://ehwa.wikidot.com.

All have the same problem!
With the little trick in the howto you can remove the running and neverending backupfrom zhe queue - but this does not help for the next try to start a new backup.

Wikidot ( or its owner Michal ) has stopped the controlling of the running services…or it does not care him anymore.

I have no idea has he died or only lost his interest on his child "Wikidot".

You cannot reach anybody in this company.
Such a good tool and such a bad service!

I have sent emails to moc.todikiw|troppus#moc.todikiw|troppus and moc.todikiw|selas#moc.todikiw|selas and as expected, no reply. With no one managing wikidot, it needs to be asked how long the server hosting will continue. I agree with the comment above that wikidot is a great tool, but it looks like we need to start looking for an alternative. Has anyone done any research on alternatives?

I know at the moment only https://miraheze.org/ which looks good enough to replace big wikis…

But this is working only with Mediawiki - source!

Did anyone managed to run a backup successfully on Wikidot?

After several attempts I am always finished with 'Queued for processing' and I need to terminate it with console after a few days. @EHWA did you manage to get any output from support please?

I looked into Miraheze, and it would not be a good replacement for wikidot. For starters, it seems like you cannot make a wiki however you like. It has to be approved by someone else, and is very strict. You can't just have personal sites or wikis. It's the complete opposite to the freedom that wikidot provides.

Every day I think about Wikidot and what to do about it. I still do not know.

I had a look into wikipedia - ("wiki farms") and Wikidot has been removed from this ( short) list… - I can see in the history.
It is a shame!

I am sorry, I have no idea!
I would save all my new pages over html copy on my harddisk… but it could be happen to be closed in some years also, not weeks or month…!

So I did some digging and it looks like Michal's last activity was on Twitter back in November.

Also, does anyone know a back up tool that doesn't require API access? I don't really want to pay for a website that's in a spiral just to back up my stuff.

I have not tried to download a backup since maybe June last year. Now I have this same problem. It's very sad to come here and discover that wikidot is apparently going defunct; abandoned by its developer.

It is... time-outs occur more and more often for me, I'm really worried about it...

I wonder where you are at home… I have in the middle of Europe no problems with my lines .. I think this is more a problem of the network-provider than wikidot itself.

If anybody was able to backup source from Wikidot without API access I would appreciate he shares how it should be done. I am just afraid that wikidot may be closed any moment I don't want to lost all my source files.

I am sorry, there is no chance for non pro accounts to use API.. and it is not the same as backup.

Does it mean that I will be able to easily backup my files as soon as I have PRO account?

Not automatically !
1) the backup in the admin manager is not working ( also not for pro accounts !)
2) the API to use needs creator knowledge in python or php or any of the written ( and old) APP's as mentioned. You need to test some of them perhaps with the newest version of the language…
and:
Pro account gives you the possibility to use in account-setup the API-Key ( read / write) - nothing else!
