Eliminates separate logins for different wikis
Multiple "identities" per user account

Something I always find inconvenient with wikis here (or other similar things, like journals on LiveJournal) is that sometimes I like separating "who I am" from different wikis. This is not in any way because I want to defraud anyone, just that for many social wikis (gaming, for example) I want to maintain a separation from other uses. Also, I might want to do this to keep a separation between these "social" sites and something related to any professional usage.

Of course, I can set up multiple logins (and have already), but this is inconvenient as you need to logout then log back in again, and unless a site has limited permissions, it is easy to forget and make an edit/post where you use the wrong identity. Once this happens, you can't really erase it as the "wrong" identity persists in page logs, etc.

Thus, it would be nice (and for me, would even be a reason to buy a Pro account), to have the ability to map my user account to a specific identity for a given wiki:

  • An identity is unique among both identities and accounts
  • Any post/edit I make in a wiki gets displayed using the identity I've mapped for that wiki
  • If no identity has been mapped for a wiki, I am given the option to have the system use my account name, or ask me at that time what identity I want to use.
  • At any later time, I can set up an identity mapping for a wiki, and then all previous logs of my activity will show only the new identity (obviously, this depends on the architecture of wikidot, where logs don't use strings but refer to a user by some id that can be mapped in a database)
  • There should be no way for another Wikidot user to see the association between another's identity and their user account.

From a user tracking perspective, allowing multiple identities does not encourage griefing or other abuse. As I already alluded to, simply creating another account is possible today. This new feature neither solves this issue, nor does it make it worse. If a user is reported, Wikidot staff can obviously tie the identity back to the user, and take appropriate action.

This I can fully agree with as I am the same way.
